"This project is an exemplary partnership of Historic Preservation and environmental education," said Supervisor St. Lawrence.
The Ramapo Saltbox Environmental Research Center, made from a reassembled, 200 year old iron-workers' saltbox style house, will be used as a museum, classroom and research center.
For the past two years, Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence has taken a lead role in supporting the Environmental Research Center. The house which originally stood on a simple outline of field stones for two hundred years will now be atop a concrete slab with thirty six inch footing. Sensitive to the working class traditions germane to the Ramapo region, St. Lawrence looks to acknowledge such traditions with the Saltbox ERC.
Organizations and institutions that have assisted in this project include Americorps, Rockland BOCES, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rockland, Ramapo College of New Jersey, and Antioch School of Environmental Studies in New Hampshire. The Saltbox ERC will house environmental education and research in the Torne Valley of Hillburn, New York, as well as offer experiential learning skills in sustainability for young people.
Please note: Guests are encouraged to bring a potluck dish that will serve 4-6 people.
