Big Brothers & Sisters of Portage County will hold the annual Bowl for Kids' Sake on Saturday, March 6, 2010. The event will be held at AMF Twin Star Lanes in Kent, Ohio. Bowling times are 2:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Proceeds of this major fundraiser will be used to continue our important work of serving more children by matching them with carefully-screened, caring Big Brother & Big Sister volunteers. Our goal this year is to raise $15,000 to help match the more than 100 children currently waiting for a Big Brother or Big Sister. We have several levels of sponsorship ranging from $100-$1,000, and we also encourage your business to form teams of 5 bowlers and participate. Cost per team is a minimum of $200 or you may register yourself for a minimum of $40 and we will put you on a team. Each bowler will receive free bowling, free shoe rental, free pizza, and a free Bowl for Kids' Sake commemorative t-shirt. This is a fun event and you do not have to be a good bowler to participate.

Meghan's Moment... Join Together: Unite!
I have really enjoyed watching the Olympics lately! No matter what the event, I feel a sense of pride behind my American team. I love seeing people's facebook and twitter posts displaying "U-S-A, U-S-A." I think it is the times when our adrenaline is rushing, emotions are being shared, and we have a common goal, that we feel closer to the people around us. It feels as though we are all one unit living vicariously through some of these Olympic athletes with a determination to conquer all!
Though it seems so simple to unite watching the Olympics and feeling part of the same team, I wonder how we can feel so alone during an economical hardship. It's nothing new to any of us that we are trying to dig out of a financial rut. However, we need to look at the ways we are uniting to come out on top. How are we supporting our companies, organizations and ourselves? How have we utilized our resources? How efficient are we operating? These are all questions we need to keep in mind as our emotions are altering in this state of the economy. The reality is we are all working towards a common goal; now is the time to cheer together and go for the gold!
Problem Solve,
Get Involved,
We'll Co-evolve! |

LEPC Workshop on New Media & Your Company Communication
Wondering if all of this "new media" will help you in an emergency? Or just wondering what is so "new" about it? Come to a free workshop hosted April 5, 2010 by the Portage County Local Emergency Planning Committee at Kent State University Student Center. Entitled "New Media, Old Media: Integrating the Best of Both Worlds Into Your Emergency Communication Plan," the workshop will assist your business, agency, government office or community in sorting through the technology choices in new media and deciding what will be the most practical and effective uses of new and old media. You'll hear communication professionals discuss: There will be a keynote opening panel whose members represent new and traditional media. They will share experiences of how today's news deadlines are measured in minutes on a 24/7 basis instead of news cycles measured in hours or a day. The day begins at 8:30 a.m. with registration and a light continental breakfast. Complimentary buffet lunch will be served. There will be breakout sessions in the morning and after lunch on topics such as forming a communication plan that is practical in use of media resources; the latest gadgets to keep your website current; and what the Local Emergency Planning Committee is to you and your community. The sessions finish up at 3 pm. To register, call Kellie Kepple, CAP, LEPC Information Coordinator at (330) 297-4571 or email her at kkepple@portageco.com. Additional information will be sent after registration. |
New Building: Lewis Chiropractic and Our Lady's Gifts
Get Healthy and Get Holy: One Stop Shop.
By: Dr. Sam Lewis and Laura Lewis
I have been in practice since September 1998. We (Laura and I) started next to Scorcher's. We were there 5 years and then Laura and I bought the lot and building at 9304 SR 43. When we started Laura ran the office and we would bring our son Connor to the office everyday. As our family grew so did our practice. We were fortunate enough to be able to hire a chiropractic assistant to run the office and Laura was able to stay home with the kids.
In October of 2007, Laura and my mother-in-law Terri decided to buy Our Lady's Gifts. Early in 2008 we started researching the possibility of expanding our building at 9304 to house their gift shop also. Late in 2008 we hired Herschman Architects to design the building and in early 2009 Doug Crowe to build it.
The impact on my chiropractic business has been tremendous. After talking about the "new building" for so long, many of my patients were excited to see what it looked like. We have also been blessed with so many of our patients referring friends and family. It is like the movie "if you build it they will come." Laura and Terri have also seen an increase in traffic through their store. The location is better than the previous one and many of my patients will then go to their shop and look for that special religious gift.
It is wonderful to have the businesses together. Having 5 children the logistics can become cumbersome. We have a common conference room between the shop and the office where the kids can hang out. During breaks its great to stop by and see them. It will also be fun to cross market our businesses. I can see the t-shirt with "Get Holy" on the front and "Get Healthy" on the back.
At Lewis Family Chiropractic we provide health care through chiropractic. Most patients come to us with some type of ache, pain or dysfunction. Many stay to maintain their health. The issue could be with their cervical (neck), thoracic (mid back), or lumbar (low back) spine. Or it could be a rib, wrist or any extremity. Any place two bones come together we are usually able to restore function to that joint. Whether the patient has migraine head aches, carpal tunnel, sciatica or low back pain we can help. Parents bring their infants in with ear aches and their athletes with sports injuries. Grandmas and grandpas come to see us too. The better your spine and joints can function, the more active and healthier you can be. We also do sports physicals and have a Migun massage table available for half hour massages.
I am also an upper cervical specific chiropractor. This is an exam, x-ray and analysis of the top vertebrae in the neck. I take opposing views of the occiput, C1 and C2 cervical spine and come up with a linear measurement to use in correcting the C1 (altas) vertebrae misalignment. It is a gentle low force technique called Grostic. Everyone could use this adjustment. Your brain stem actually penetrates inside the center of your atlas. It's a vital area to be clear in your spine. 15 to 20 million nerves travel in and around this area.
On the south side of the building Our Lady's Gifts offers a wide range of religious gifts, from First Communion and Confirmation items to wedding, christening and funeral mementoes. Books, framed pictures, medals, crosses, statues and many other items can be found at Our Lady's Gifts.
Our Lady's Gifts is open from 10-5 Monday - Friday and 10-3 on Saturdays. 330-626-1980 Lewis Family Chiropractic is open daily and on Saturdays by appointment. 330-422-1551.

February Luncheon in Review
Surviving Change in an Age of Instability
On Wednesday February 10th, Ann Otto of The Otto HR Group spoke to an intimate crowd who braved the winter storm at the Hampton Inn & Suites. Otto focused her discussion on change and effective ways to manage resistance to change among co-workers and employees. Otto also had an interactional approach for guests to recognize how they are affected by change themselves. The discussion was rich and everyone seemed to be pleased with their takeaway message. The event was sponsored by Anna Maria of Aurora.

Diane Barben of Anna Maria of Aurora talks to the group as the luncheon sponsor about passing on the gift of Anna Maria on to friends and family. |
Streetsboro High School Scholarship Fund
Donations/Senior Luncheon Sponsors Greatly Appreciated
Dear Streetsboro Area Chamber Community: As we are all aware, education is very important to both our past, present and future communities. As a business organization within the Streetsboro Area, it is our hope to promote education among the youth of Streetsboro in order for them to strive for both higher education and a future career.
We are asking you as our Chamber members and supporters of this community to be a part of this hope. We have two major opportunities to provide hope for our children of Streetsboro. Each year, the Streetsboro Area Chamber of Commerce arranges a "Senior Appreciation Luncheon." It is set up to provide every graduating senior with a 3.0 GPA or better an opportunity to have lunch in a professional environment among local business professionals and with the students' peers to listen to an enlightening speech and walk away with a certificate of achievement and a few door prizes.
This year, our luncheon will be held on Wednesday May 12th at St. Joan of Arc Parish. We are asking each chamber member to sponsor at least one student for $15. You can sponsor more if you are able, but we also invite our membership and parents of students to attend this luncheon to serve as an example and mentor in interacting with the students that day. Last year, we celebrated the achievements of over 66 Streetsboro High School seniors. The students' feedback was very positive, and we know this year will follow the success of last year!
Finally, unfortunately last year we were unable to contribute a scholarship award given in previous years to a student pursuing a career in business due to lack of funding. This year, we would like to be able to present one scholarship to a deserving student. We are asking for your help to contribute any amount you are able to put toward our scholarship fund. We thank you for sharing a common vision of hope for our students; the leaders of tomorrow! Most Sincerely, The 2010 Scholarship Chamber Committee
