Valentine's Trivia |
 |
February 14th was the date of the Roman festival of Lupercalia - where young men held a lottery to decide which girl would be theirs.
During Medieval times, girls ate unusual foods on St. Valentine's Day to have a dream of their future husband.
In the middle Ages, people believed that the first unmarried person of the opposite sex you met on the morning of St. Valentine's Day would become your spouse.
In the middle of the 17th century even married people took a Valentine - not always their legal other half!
Alexander Graham Bell applied for his patent on the telephone, on the Valentine's Day, 1876. |

Meghan's Moment... Start the New Year Off Right: Plan Ahead!
Well Has the New Year snuck up on you? Do you feel like you are behind on planning and are trying to play catch up? Don't worry-it's still January, and you have a little bit of time left to get organized.
The problem many people experience is trying to break bad habits. On average, it takes two weeks for a person to actively practice a habit for it to "stick". For example, think about all of the New Year's resolutions which involve trying to lose weight. You are trying to break a habit or pattern which has caused you to gain excess weight. So in order to break it, you need proactively work on it for atleast two weeks to develop and maintain a regiment.
But why do so many weight loss plans fail? Why do we feel we are always procrastinating in our jobs? What will it take for us to make changes we need to make? And the million dollar answer....Education! Have you ever had that "a-ha" moment when you learn more about something you may have been apprehensive about or just didn't have a clue? It's a great feeling! And I think if we, in turn, can realize sometimes our employees, our bosses, our co-workers and our customers just need to be educated more on topics and issues we are trying to convey to them in order to take action, we might have a better working relationship and success in our businesses.
This year, the Chamber realizes the need for businesses to plan ahead and learn more about how they can get involved. We'd encourage you to contact our office if you are interested in learning more about ways to sponsor events, host luncheons, host after hours or join a committee. It may be a lot easier than you think, and you may be able to address that strategic planning and marketing plan you have been procrastinating on until now. Our 2010 Membership campaign is "Probelm Solve, Get Invovled, We'll Co-Evolve". And it means exaclty what is says, together with your invovlement and our networking and opportunties, we will proactively grow together as a business and community.·

 Operation S.W.A.K.
Did you know that, according to the Department of Defense, there are nearly 1.5 million active U.S. military personnel? To help residents show their support and send messages to loved ones serving our country, The UPS Store is on a mission to send love to troops overseas. That mission is called Operation S.W.A.K. From now through February 14th both Portage County locations of The UPS Store will provide free first-class postage (44 cents) for one-ounce valentines and letters to U.S. military personnel stationed overseas or to veterans in VA hospitals.
"A handwritten card or letter is a simple way to pay tribute to the efforts and sacrifices of the brave men and women who serve our country," said Trudy Capel, The UPS Store franchisee. "Each and every card is a valuable reminder of home for the soldier who receives it."
How can you participate in Operation S.W.A.K.? Eligible mail must be addressed to a specific U.S. ServicePerson at an assigned APO/FPO address or a specific veteran residing in a VA hospital, and must bear a valid return address. It is recommended that people send their greetings by January 31st for overseas delivery by Valentine's Day, although cards and letters will be accepted through February 14th.
"Many people are using e-mail as a quick means of communication with loved ones overseas, but nothing compares to the sentiment of a handwritten card or letter."

The Power of Delegating
By Chief Taiclet
Whether you are a single enterpreneur or small business owner with a number of employees, you should consider delegating responsibilities. Delegation is one of the toughest jobs to learn. Many business owners are "take charge" persons. The tendency is to say, "I can do it better myself." Make delegation a part of your overall plan for your business. You and the business will be better off for it. Select the right people to undertake specific tasks. Choose competent employees with an interest in new assignments. They may have the potential to showcase unknown abilities. Delegation can be an opportunity to learn new skills or take on added responsibility. If you have a staff of employees, be sure to cross train so there are back-ups for your absence or the absence of a key employee. Recognize or reward employees who assume additional duties. Delegation should provide opportunity for you to ease your workload and communicate to valued employees that you are trusting them with the tasks because of your confidence in their abilities. Clearly, I have very competent personnel to run our police department in my absence. This is essential because the business runs 24/7. Even in my presence, my staff performs very efficiently, leaving me unburdened. This allows me to direct my involvement to other worthwhile commitments in the community. One of which is the Streetsboro Area Chamber of Commerce!
