With the holiday shopping season arriving it is a great time of year to spotlight our local retail stores! During the month of December we would like to invite all Streetsboro & Aurora Retail Stores to participate in a FREE holiday shopping event called SaleHOP!
A SaleHOP is sort of like a bar-hop, but for shoppers! This event will be promoted on WDOK radio, in local newspapers, with flyers, and online with an innovative new website called SaleHOP.com.
Each store will be listed on SaleHOP.com for shoppers to hop from store to store to checkout holiday specials. Each store will have flyers with a list of all participating stores. As shoppers visit each store they can earn "SaleHOP" points for a fun prize...no purchase required. This event is at no cost to retailers and is designed to invite shoppers to check out what Streetsboro stores have to offer.
If you are a retail store and would like to participate, send an email or call 330-348-0500. SaleHOP is also one of our newest Chamber members! Welcome! |

Smart Minds Consulting
Smart Minds Consulting Services (SMCS) is a unique combination of technology professionals who focus on solving your business requirements using technology and the internet. Their goal is to provide their clients with a Return On Their Investment (ROTI). They utilize the "bottom up" approach. This means they help mid-level companies compete and succeed against their rivals, both big and small. They do not replace domestic technology resources with lower cost, outsourced resources.
SMCS does not work with large corporations, but rather with mid-level companies who cannot afford to spend $X amount on necessary technology projects. The company's inability to complete these types of critical projects causes them to continue performing costly manual processes which reduces their overall competitiveness. In the long term, this can be detrimental to the health of their company. This is where SMCS can help by providing cost effective, technology solutions - not just resources, thereby increasing their clients' competiveness and profitability. They enable companies to move forward on projects previously considered cost prohibitive. Called the "bottom up" approach, this helps mid-level companies compete and win which gives them the opportunity to grow, hire more people and become more profitable. This provides their clients a Return On Their Investment (ROTI).

Meghan's Moment... State of the Chamber Address:
Well we made it through another great year! And although I was not a part of the entire 2009 year, I was honored to join such a wonderful group of people last April. I have already learned a great amount of information from so many of you, and I look forward to building future relationships with others. The best part, and I'm not sure if you all realize this, is that we all have so many things in common with our businesses. Although we have experienced the rise and fall of the economy, we have still been able to pull together and support our business efforts. I have been floored by the attendance at our networking events, before hours, after hours and during luncheons. I commend all of you for stepping outside of your comfort zones and taking risks.
Risks are necessary to make positive changes and move forward. As your Chamber of Commerce, we are here to support your efforts, provide networking opportunities as well as a forum for growth. (So, please, use us!) I can't emphasize enough how important our members are! You give our Chamber personality and spark! And you also are the supporting foundation through your membership and event participation which helps us sustain our Chamber efforts in this community. And for our community and other leadership, we look to you for collaborative efforts and support. We welcome opportunities to partner in order to help our Streetsboro area community co-evolve.
In closing, as we take our membership of approximately 200 into 2010, let us all be open to new opportunities and bring forth our personal ideas. I know together, we can all achieve the success we are looking for.
2009 Highlights: Our 2nd annual health fair had over 60 exhibitors and was a big success. We were able to engage the community through showcasing so many of our wonderful businesses in the health industry. We had three women in business luncheons (and yes, some men attended), but we learned everything from how to "give 'em the pickle to "dressing for success." One of our proudest moments was recognizing over 64 students from Streetsboro High School with GPA's of 3.0 or higher...our largest class yet! And thank you all for making their lunch possible through your generous sponsorship. They were excited to engage with our business community. We had 3 major grand openings: Robinson Health Center at Streetsboro, Key Bank of Streetsboro and Streetsboro Dental. Our golf outing at Raccoon Hill yielded a record turnout of 96 golfers! We took our luncheon off the normal sites, and decided to showcase the businesses. Among those were Hampton Inn, Hattie Larlham and of course our hottest lunch ever: The Streetsboro Fire Department, with over 80 people in attendance. Our 2009 expo yielded over 50 vendors and exhibitors. Special thanks to all of our attendees, the committee and of course the Streetsboro School District, who was so helpful in our efforts. I want to thank Arabica for hosting our Coffee 'n Contacts every other Tuesday...they have been wonderful and hospitable. We have also begun many collaborative efforts across the Chambers. We have many new faces in the community, and we know that collaboration is key in making the best experience possible for our Chamber members.
Thank you all for your continual support of the Streetsboro Area Chamber of Commerce! |

Feel Better...Get Away!
By Chief Taiclet
Taking a vacation could be the best medication to improve your health. The health benefits of taking a vacation are well established. And, perhaps more important, the absence of a vacation can be seriously detrimental to your health. It's also been proven that people who don't take regular vacations are at a much greater risk for heart disease and depression. Time off from work is needed now more than ever in these challenging times. People are so stressed, and many are working harder to compensate for those who are not working. Time off is especially essential now. Even if you do as I do, take time away from work. You need not go on an actual "vacation", but just get away from your job for awhile, even if you just stay around home. I call this a "stacation". In one survey for Expedia.com, 92% of those who responded feel that two weeks of vacation would prevent a burnout. Vacation time isn't just a perk. The stress associated with the current economy makes the need for time away from work more important than ever. So do your part for the health of the country and your family. Take a break! |
2009 NOACC Bright Star Award
Kathy Hammond, Kent Credit Union The purpose of the NOACC Bright Star Award is to recognize a member from each participating Chamber, who has made a significant impact on the Chamber through membership, retention, sponsorship, economic development, operations and/or education.
Kathy Hammond was selected and honored among 40 other Chambers last month at the Cadillac Ranch for her significant Chamber contributions, which have made her a Bright Star for 2009. Kathy has participated in some way in every event the Chamber has hosted through sponsorship, donation, committee work or attendance over the past years. She has been instrumental on the membership committee and expo committee, among others. She has also been a foundational leader in the community annual fundraiser "Hats Off to Hattie" to help raise money for Hattie Larlham. Kathy's professionalism, work ethic and personality are a priceless contribution to both the Chamber of Commerce and those who have the pleasure of working with her.
It was an easy choice to select Kathy Hammond for this year's Bright Star Award!

The Quarterly Industrial Roundtable
Hosted at Deluxe Corporation
Robert J. Wells, Senior Vice President for Corporate Communications and Public Affairs for Sherwin-Williams, spoke on "Fishing Where the Fish Are...Work Smarter, Not Harder". He educated the guests in attendance on how to handle marketing and staying afloat in today's economy. He also shared some of the techniques Sherwin-Williams has performed to sustain and grow their market.
Guests were able to share with each other their personal strengths and struggles along with asking Wells his professional expertise.
The Industrial Roundtable is held quarterly and set up primarily for our Industrial members in the Streetsboro Area Chamber of Commerce to address their specific business needs and connect them with other industries in our area to learn from experiences and grow together. |
Dear Community,
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for making Christmas 2008 a memorable one for the families with children in Streetsboro and invite you to come together as a community again this year and participate in "Community Christmas." "Community Christmas" is a program that provides support to our families in Streetsboro who find it financially difficult to provide gifts for their children at Christmas. Our goal is to fulfill the holiday wishes of children and families who might otherwise be without gifts this year. "Community Christmas" is now in its sixth year! The program began in 2004 and provided Christmas for 96 children, growing to 124 children in 2005, 178 children in 2006, 210 children in 2007, and 250 children in 2008! "Community Christmas" would love to have your support and participation this year. There are many ways that local businesses can help. One suggestion is to set up a "Giving Tree." Decorate the tree with tags stating the age and sex of a child. A tag is selected, a gift is purchased and returned to be placed under the tree unwrapped. (Families will be "shopping" for their children on Dec. 17th) This year Jessica Reker, a 14 year old who loves to help her community, especially with "Community Christmas" (she has helped the last three years) has taken on a project of her own. Our largest need is for donated items for our teen population, ages 13 - 18 (last year we served 57 teens and we anticipate this year will be closer to 70). Jessica is contacting major companies such as Nike, Adidas, etc. asking for any donations of products that the company would be able to provide to us for our teens. We would also like to invite businesses to help setup on December 16th and/or help parents shop on December 17th. The shopping will take place at St. Joan of Arc Hall (Father Stenson Center). To volunteer, make a donation, or with any questions, please call 330-626-3854.
With thanks and anticipation, Pam Danner
