Dear Community...
Halloween Trivia
Did you know?

A pumpkin is a berry in the cucurbitaceae family, which also includes melons, cucumbers, squash and gourds. All these plants are native to the Americas.

There are no words in the dictionary that rhyme with orange, the color of pumpkin.

Samhainophobia is an intense fear of Halloween.

Halloween is the 2nd most commercially successful holiday, with Christmas being the first. People spend as much as over $2.5 billion during Halloween on candies, costumes, decorations and parties.

More than 35 million pounds of candy corn will be produced this year. That equates to nearly 9 billion pieces - enough to circle the moon nearly 4 times if laid end-to-end.

SaleHOP.com
With the holiday shopping season arriving it is a great time of year to spotlight our local retail stores!  During the month of December we would like to invite all Streetsboro & Aurora Retail Stores to participate in a FREE holiday shopping event called SaleHOP!

A SaleHOP is sort of like a bar-hop, but for shoppers!  This event will be promoted on WDOK radio, in local newspapers, with flyers, and online with an innovative new website called SaleHOP.com.

Each store will be listed on SaleHOP.com for shoppers to hop from store to store to checkout holiday specials.  Each store will have flyers with a list of all participating stores.  As shoppers visit each store they can earn "SaleHOP" points for a fun prize...no purchase required.  This event is at no cost to retailers and is designed to invite shoppers to check out what Streetsboro stores have to offer.

If you are a retail store and would like to participate, send an email or call 330-348-0500.

SaleHOP is also one of our newest Chamber members!  Welcome!

Meghan's Moment...
Meghan Urbon "Without change there is no innovation, creativity or incentive for improvement.  Those who initiate change will have a better opportunity to manage the change that is inevitable." ~William Pollard

I want to make sure to take a moment to remind all of you that this is your Chamber of Commerce, and as members, you have the right to speak up on what's working and conversely, what's not working.  It is very frustrating to hear about people not rejoining a Chamber because as they say "it wasn't worth it" or "it didn't work for me."  On the other hand, it's even more exciting to hear people say "hey, I have an idea or suggestion" or "have you ever thought of doing an event or luncheon this way?"  As your Chamber of Commerce, myself and our Board of Directors are here to help guide the Chamber in a positive direction, but we are only able to do this most effectively with your input.  What are your business needs?  What can we change with our events, promotions or communications?  What would make your Chamber experience more effective?

Remember, we are here to serve you, help promote and grow your business and have some fun along the way.  In the next couple of months, I am going to be reaching out to each of you to set up a brief meeting or phone call and listen to your Chamber experience, both the good and the bad. Really take the time to think about what would help you. From there, I will be keeping your thoughts and suggestions and utilizing them to implement things in different ways in the upcoming year.  I hope that you will keep me updated as to how new strategies and events are or are not working.  I think you will find great benefits in being part of the process.  As we plan for 2010, please consider your involvement with the Streetsboro Area Chamber as an opportunity to make the most of yourself and your business.  We are in this together to move forward into a successful future!

We had a Chinese auction, face painting and sold mums.  We also had a scavenger hunt which was very successful where all participants had to fill up a grid with stickers.  This allowed all the businesses to be visited.  Overall it was a very successful event!  We want to thank all of our participants, sponsors, donors, volunteers and community members who help support this event!

Halloween Safety
By Chief Taiclet

MOTORISTS NEED TO USE EXTRA CARE TO KEEP KIDS SAFE!  Pedestrian fatalities involving children are much higher during trick-or-treat nights than at any other time of the year.  Please consider some simple rules of thumb to keep our children safe.

Motorists should:
-SLOW DOWN in residential neighborhoods.  Give yourself extra time to react to children.
-Watch for children walking on the roadways.  Dark costumes may make them harder to see.
-Look for children crossing the street.  They may not be paying attention or darting between parked cars.
-Carefully enter and exit drives and intersections.
-Turn on your headlights even in the daylight.
-Broaden your scanning by looking for children left and right.

Parents should:
-Ensure an adult or older, responsible youth is available to supervise children under age 12.
-Instruct children to travel only in familiar areas.
-Set a time for children to return home
-Make sure children are visible - be creative in using reflective tape or designing ways to improve visibility.
-See that the children wear costumes that don't obstruct vision, avoid facemasks.
-Instruct them to stay on sidewalks and avoid walking on the road if possible.
-If there are no sidewalks, inform them to walk on the left, facing traffic.
-Tell them to look both ways before crossing the street.
-Instruct them to never cross between parked vehicles or mid-block.
-Find out where your children are going.

Many of my Officers, including myself, will be actively patroling the residential areas of Streetsboro during the trick-or-treat hours of 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Saturday October 31.

Let's keep our kids safe!

October Chamber Luncheon Recap

Over 50 guests joined us on October 14th at Twin Lakes Country Club for fun fall networking.  The luncheon was sponsored by Kent Credit Union.  Jim Ahern of Sandler Training spoke on "Prospecting" and provided help tools and tactics involving business sales, referral strategies, and follow-up.  Jim has been with Sandler for about one year. Before Sandler, Jim was the Executive Director of Sales and Marketing for 32 years for Eli Lilly & Co.  He also did Dale Carnegie Training for 5 years.

Please note, there will be no November luncheon due to our Annual Dinner on November 5th.  Our monthly networking luncheon will resume on December 9th for a Holiday Luncheon.

Dear Community,

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for making Christmas 2008 a memorable one for the families with children in Streetsboro and invite you to come together as a community again this year and participate in "Community Christmas."  "Community Christmas", is a program that provides support to our families in Streetsboro who find it financially difficult to provide gifts for their children at Christmas.

Our goal is to fulfill the holiday wishes of children and families who might otherwise be without gifts this year.  "Community Christmas" is now in its sixth year!  The program began in 2004 and provided Christmas for 96 children, growing to 124 children in 2005, 178 children in 2006, 210 children in 2007, and 250 children in 2008!

"Community Christmas" would love to have your support and participation this year.  There are many ways that local business can help.  One suggestion would be to set up a "Giving Tree."  Decorate the tree with tags stating the age and sex of a child.  A tag is selected, a gift is purchased and returned to be placed under the tree unwrapped.  (Families will be "shopping" for their children on Dec. 17th)

This year Jessica Reker, a 14 year old who loves to help her community, especially with "Community Christmas" (she has helped the last three years) has taken on a project of her own.  Our largest need is for donated items for our teen population, ages 13 - 18 (last year we served 57 teens and we anticipate this year will be closer to 70).  Jessica is contacting major companies such as Nike, Adidas, etc. asking for any donations of products that the company would be able to provide to us for our teens.

We would also like to invite businesses to help setup on December 16th and/or help parents shop on December 17th.  The shopping will take place at St. Joan of Arc Hall (Father Stenson Center).

To volunteer, make a donation, or with any questions, please call 330-626-3854.

With thanks and anticipation,
Pam Danner
