Women in Business Luncheon!
Our women in Business Luncheon was held on July 29th at the Hampton Inn & Suites in Streetsboro.  Thirty
seven people were in attendance. Lisa Kusner of Aurora Farms Premium Outlets Spoke about "Dressing for Success".  Her program was very entertaining and taught the women about the do's and do not's of the fashion world in the workplace.  Each woman (and man) shared aloud, their favorite item to wear to work.

The Chamber would cordially like to thank The Hampton Inn & Suites of Streetsboro for their generous hospitality.  The next WIB luncheon will be October 28th.  Location to be determined.

Ever wonder where August came from?
August was named in honor of Augustus Caesar. It was decided that since Julius Caesar's month, July, had 31 days, Augustus' month should equal it.

Under the Julian calendar, the months alternated evenly between 30 and 31 days (with the exception of February), which made August 30 days long. So, instead of August having a mere 30 days, it was lengthened to 31, preventing anyone from claiming that Emperor Augustus was saddled with an inferior month.
To accommodate this change two other calendrical adjustments were necessary:
First, the extra day needed to inflate August was taken from February, which originally had 29 days (30 in a leap year), and was now reduced to 28 days (29 in a leap year).
and
Second, since the months evenly alternated between 30 and 31 days, adding the extra day to August meant that July, August, and September would all have 31 days. So to avoid three long months in a row, the lengths of the last four months were switched around, giving us 30 days in September, April, June, and November.

Meghan's Moment...
Meghan Urbon
So, I have to brag a bit... I recently welcomed an eight week old puggle named Rooney into my home.  A puggle is a cross between a pug and a beagle.  He is just too cute, and I haven't had a pet since I was about seven, so this was a welcomed surprise.  It's amazing though how a change like this affects your whole life and the routine you had previously.  I am now getting up at 5am to take him outside.  I'm also being more conscientious about when to feed him and walk him etc.  But, one of the things that is truly challenging is teaching him some of the things I would have taken for granted because I never had to train another animal.  It sounds funny, and I'm sure it's similar with raising a child in other aspects, but it's all of those little things like training him how to sit or stay off the furniture or not chew everything in sight.  Can't I just have a dog and not the responsibility part?

Many of us may be able to relate in our jobs when a new person comes on board and joins the staff.  Sure there are some of the many duties and functions they know how to do, but are we taking the time to work with them, to understand their point of view or show the different ways tasks are done at your particular place of employment.  I think we often take for granted that people know how to do all of the things we know how do to, and it's easy to get very impatient with any of their shortcomings.  Perhaps it is worth taking a moment to reflect on the first time you started at your job and how you felt or how long it took to learn your responsibilities.  Have you fallen into a routine that may even need changing?  How detailed are you in your instruction and teaching to others?  What is your social role in the work atmosphere and how could you improve that?  Many of us may be doing the same job day in and day out, but there is always room for improvement, and I encourage you to break free from the work mode for a second and reflect on your current outlook of what you do and how you do it...you may be surprised with the realizations that emerge.

August Chamber  Luncheon Recap Hattie logo

The August Luncheon held at Hattie Larlham brought together about 40 attendees for a great meal at a great place! Representatives from Hattie Larlham: Darryl Mast, Pat Savage and Nancy Farinacci, spoke about the history of Hattie Larlham and the addition recently added to the historic facility.  Members engaged in questions about how to get more involved in supporting Hattie Larlham and spreading their powerful message.  After the luncheon, the staff at Hattie gave complimentary tours, which most guests attended.  The luncheon was cordially sponsored by Simplex-IT and catered by Steve Schwartz and HoneyBaked Ham Cafe.

'Signs' of the Times

By Chief Taiclet

Signs are a business necessity. Every business needs and uses signs in one form or another.  They are functional and an effective means to advertise your location, your product and your presence in the community. They give you the opportunity to showcase your name, logo and even a slogan.  Signs are an extension of your brand and image - use them to good advantage.

Signs can be relatively inexpensive, permanent and practical.  A sign is a powerful tool that performs three major roles:  it identifies your business, it recognizes your location and it builds your business image.  An effective sign is the most successful way of attracting the attention of potential customers/clients.  Sign-company professionals can be a big help in the design/message concept.  A word of caution - check to make sure exterior signage conforms with local building and zoning codes.

Signs are an excellent means of advertising your business.  A well-designed sign can accomplish a variety of tasks beneficial to your business.  Signs that work convey a sense of the business and positively influence the customer's perception.  They help build the visibility and positive image of your products or services.  Put signs to work for your growing business!

Six Steps to Better Listening on a Sales Call (or with your spouse!)
By Jim Ahern

The ability, the desire, and the patience to listen are prerequisites to success in sales. You'll pay the highest compliment to the buyer.

1) Prepare in advance
As you wait for the meeting, think about the buyer and the company.  Don't  allow yourself to focus on other issues right before you enter the prospect's office.  Pledge to yourself that you will give this person the best "listening-to" he or she has ever received.

2) Set a goal
Vow that in the time allotted to you for the call, you will get to know this buyer's values, beliefs, goals, desires, dreams, fears, and pain better than any other sales person ever has.  Muster all the concentration you can.  Listen to understand, NOT to plan a counterattack.

3) Get into listening posture
Give steady eye contact; resist the temptation to let your eyes shift around you as you think.  Sit slightly forward when the buyer speaks, lean back when you speak.  Nod occasionally. Don't forget to smile.

4) Take notes
It's polite to ask permission to do so, but you'll almost never be denied. Taking notes shows your interest in the buyer's message, helps  you stay in control of the call, and provides valuable data to review later or share with your sales team.

5) Screen out distractions
Don't glance around the office while in conversation.  Pay no mind to noise filtering into the room. Don't be thrown off by people who come in or walk by.  Imagine that you and the buyer are in a tunnel alone and all you can see or hear is each other.  Think only about the moment.

6) Limit your talking
You can't listen and speak at the same time.  Hold your fire.  Hear the buyer out completely on every topic.  Don't interrupt even if you have the answer to a point the buyer makes.  Judge the meaning of the buyers message only after all words are spoken and/or you have utilized clarifying questions.
