The Evolution of a Summertime Treat |
 |
In 1905, an 11-year-old boy named Frank Epperson invented the first Popsicle. He created it completely by accident, one chilly night! Frank left a mixture of powdered soda and water, with a stirring stick, on his porch. He awoke the next morning and found a frozen pop! He first named his frozen pop an "Epsicle", but when he got older his kids asked for "Pop's" sicle and the new name was born. Popsicles are more popular than ever today, with Cherry being the number one favorite flavor! |

Meghan's Moment...
Are you on Facebook? The Chamber just recently became a Facebook member, and you can "friend" us at "Streetsboro-Area Chamber." So how about you...ever considered Facebooking? Social Networking is the newest "trendy" way of marketing yourself and your business. Goodness, there is MySpace, Linked In, Twitter, Blogging and who knows what else available on the World Wide Web that lets you connect with millions upon millions of people everyday! You can announce your every move over the Internet such as what you plan to eat for breakfast, how you are feeling about your day or what you are thinking of naming your new pet fish. What a feature! OK, so this is all fine and good, but how can you use these tools to effectively market YOUR business?
People say they like online social networks because they do not seem as aggressive and make the company seem more personable. It's important to cut through the clutter, but sometimes, it's the humanizing and personifying of your company that makes or breaks that business deal. People like to deal with businesses they can relate to and trust. This carries over in your daily in-person business transactions. We all want to display professionalism to achieve credibility, but how many of us are having trouble getting through that robotic elevator speech and focusing your time and attention on the person you are interacting with at that moment in time? The best business relationships I have ever achieved have begun as casual relationships. Perhaps, trying this "social networking" phenomenon may be your first step into gaining some insight of relationship building.
There's even a cheat sheet feature on Facebook that keeps you updated on everyone's birthday! Maybe that small gesture of sending a birthday card to someone, even though you saw it on Facebook, is meaningful enough for that other person to remember you. And that's the key to referrals and retaining...remembering! This is the time to start getting creative and making yourself standout from the bunch. Hope to see you soon, if not in person, then on the Web! |

Get Involved!
By Chief Taiclet
The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization where people mobilize to help their neighbors---down the street, across the country and around the world---in emergencies. A hot meal delivered to victims after a disaster, blood when it is needed most, shelter when there is nowhere else to turn, an emergency message delivered to a member of the Armed Forces from their family---these are just some of the services provided by the American Red Cross.
Red Cross chapters are the backbone of our local presence. Your support helps them maintain a nationwide network of chapters to provide lifesaving programs and services in communities across the country. Please help to ensure that the Red Cross can continue to deliver them. Help support this vital organization by giving or getting involved with one of their programs.
You can help save someone's life by performing CPR because you've been certified. Or enjoy going to the beach without fear of drowning because you took Red Cross swimming lessons. Getting involved with the Red Cross can lead to many possibilities. Here are three worthwhile ways: donate, volunteer, give blood. I can attest to the latter, as I have donated several gallons, and it is very gratifying.
The Red Cross also has conprehensive health and safety programs. Through your company's participation in one or several of these courses, you enable the American Red Cross to provide lifesaving programs and services within our community. Contact your local Red Cross rep, Kara Dombroski, at 330-296-9991 to learn about OSHA requirements for workplace safety training. They offer a wide range of safety and first aid courses to assist you in building a safer workplace. Please also consider joining the Portage County Safety Council.
The American Red Cross is not a government agency; it relies on donations of time, money and blood to do its work. Partnering with the American Red Cross connects your company to an organization that is trusted to help save lives, be there in times of disaster and increase personal safety and security. For information about how your company can partner with the Red Cross, call 202-303-8380 or visit them at www.RedCross.org.

"Solicit Feedback" Sales Gospel According to Joseph By Jason Tarr "Lost opportunities can be your greatest source of development." - Don Shula (former NFL coach) I started planning for my recent trip to Destin, FL several months ago by calling vacation home rental companies. After explaining what I was looking for in a beach house and gathering their responses, I ended the call by telling them that I was checking around and would make a decision after speaking with all the agencies. A few of the better sales reps asked me for a follow up phone number. To my surprise, one and only one agency, Ocean Reef Resorts, called me back. They asked if I had gone ahead and booked a rental to which I replied "yes". They then asked if I had a few minutes to discuss with them why I chose that particular agency and property over theirs. They stressed that they strive to deliver the highest level of quality service and properties to their clients and that my feedback would help assure this. They further stressed that while they could not deliver this time, that perhaps with my feedback they would be my choice for my next vacation to Destin. All too often when we do not win the business we shrug it off and move on to the next deal without a thought in the world of what went wrong. Excuses will be made but typically no changes to the personal sales approach or process will be. It is these customers that can shed the best light on where we need to improve (and everybody always has room for improvement). For example, when I lost a relationship to a competing banker I always followed up by asking what factors went into their decision, what did I do right, and what could I have done differently. I then followed up a few weeks later to check in on how the other bank is doing in terms of delivering on their promises and their level of client service. Is the experience what they expected? How is your personal business banker working out? It proved to be a great educational and developmental tool as well as a client acquisition technique as many of these prospects appreciated my professionalism and later switched over part or all of their relationship to me. Furthermore, this approach works with the prospects you win. When's the last time you asked a prospect why they decided to go with your proposal over the competition? Their responses, like above, can also shed light on behaviors that work well and should be mimicked for future prospects. It also makes a great transition point to ask for a testimonial in writing. One more thing, I received a personal thank you card in the mail from Ocean Reef Resorts thanking me for taking their call and being honest with my responses. Thank you to Szalay's Farm!
Established in 1931, Szalay's open farm market is located in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, in Peninsula, Ohio. They feature fresh picked fruits and vegetables, plus local "homemade goodies". Last year, they received recognition on Cleveland.com for the area's best pumpkins and spreadable jellies!
John and Paula Szalay (below), work with Chamber Board Member Greg Weigle who helps to coordinate their services.
The Chamber is very appreciative as, for the past two years, Szalay's has donated at least 200 ears of corn for our dinners each year!
Visit Szalay's Farm at 4563 Riverview Road or call them at 330-657-2727. They are on the internet too, at www.dayinthevalley.com.
Thank you for your generosity John and Paula! |
