Meghan's Moment...
On January 20, 1961 President John F. Kennedy stated to the American people, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." These words have turned up almost half of a century later in classrooms, movies, meetings and in conversation. But why you might ask? It's because that same message principle can be applied in so many ways today. President Kennedy was challenging the American people to tap into their potential and take advantage of their opportunities to spread freedom through the country and the world. He asked them to consider taking on a new perspective and not being satisfied with the status quo. He also asked them to come together in times of hardship to fight a battle together and invoke peace throughout all nations. People of America were provided the chance to live in a democracy and have a right to freedom; however, the way they capitalized on that civil liberty and flourished was in their own hands. In finishing out my first month in the Chamber, I've had many members, new and old, ask "What can the Chamber do for me?" My response is of course, "Lots of things!" But seriously, I was glancing at the chamber benefits that members receive, and thought about how people could really be thriving if they took advantage of these opportunities. People usually attend our monthly luncheons and Coffee 'n Contacts sessions, which are both great ways to network and market yourself, but think about what else you could be doing on top of all that. Why not host a Business After Hours event at your company and bring the Chamber in so we can see all of the great things you have to offer? Or how about place an advertisement in our monthly newsletter to keep us informed of new initiatives? Do you have any new member to member discounts to offer? Let us know! Ever consider serving on a Chamber committee and getting to know some of your fellow members a bit better to personalize your networking? Or how about contacting us with a new idea or suggestion you have on a networking event or fundraiser? It's easy to get caught in repetition and doing things the same way because we get comfortable with it or "that's how it was done in the past" (one of my least favorite phrases). Of course the Chamber is here for you and to help your business, but how are you helping the Chamber as a whole, which in turn helps you and your business thrive by taking an active role? I'd like to challenge you to consider doing one thing different this month in your business networking and marketing initiatives. You could attend an event you've never been to before. You could slightly rephrase how you market your company profile - think about what the person on the other end is hearing. You could stop in the Chamber office to visit and talk about your business needs. What better time than the present to make an active change and see what we can do for each other!

Health Fair Recap
The Second Annual Health Fair was held on April 23rd at St. Joan of Arc Church. Our sponsors were Curtis Professional Group and Dr. Martin W. Layman, General Family Dentistry. There were 30 booths and approximately 150 attendees this year, which was similar to last year's turnout. The Chamber raised $2217.68.
Julie Anderson, Marketing Coordinator of SafeNet Security commented, "Overall good experience. The set up (layout) was great and good traffic moving all day. People constantly walked through and all were very pleasant. Everyone came over to our table and engaged us in conversation. I participate in other shows and felt I saw more people at the Streetsboro Health Fair than these other shows. Overall best show I have ever attended. We will definantely do this one again as it was better results for us."
Many thanks to the committee: Cheryl DeCavitch (Home Savings & Loan), Dave Christopher (Integrity Home Inspection), Steve Kleiber (United Way), Richard Taiclet (Chief of Police), Katie Mathies (Streetsboro Senior Center), Heather Taylor (Ravenna Chiropractic & Rehabilitation), Michelle Kisthardt (Western Reserve Raquet and Fitness Club) and Robert Wright (Real Associates). We are looking forward to next year!

"Positive First Impressions" By Susan Fee
When you watch TV or listen to the radio, how long is it before you to decide whether or not you like the programming? Seconds, perhaps? That's exactly how long you have before others form an impression of you.
First impressions are crucial because they set the stage for future conversations, relationships, and business. Face-to-face communication matters, but so do all the other ways we send messages about ourselves. Consider what your cell phone ring says about you? What about your voice-mail message, posture, and handshake?
When it comes to your image, be proactive. Determine how you want to be perceived rather than wait to be labeled. Choose three descriptive words you'd like others to associate with your name, and then consciously behave and speak in ways that support those descriptions. Here are ten more success tips from Positive First Impressions: 83 Ways to Establish Confidence, Competence, and Trust, by Susan Fee.
1. Share what you can do, not what you can't. Whatever you focus on expands, so by emphasizing your strengths, they'll grow and you'll be associated with success. 2. Be consistent.
Building trust requires predictable, consistent behavior. Act professionally whether it's in the office, elevator, or break room. Someone is always watching. 3. Choose friends wisely.
You will naturally be linked with the company you keep. If you spend time with people who are known for negative characteristics like gossiping, you'll be found guilty by association. 4. Eliminate "try" from your vocabulary.
It's a verbal escape clause that communicates lack of commitment. Instead of trying to do your best, just do it. 5. Speak at a rate of approximately 150 words per minute.
Slow talkers are associated with being boring and fast talkers are often perceived as being dishonest. (Figure out your rate by reading 150 words of an article out loud and timing yourself.) 6. Drop tag questions.
Ending sentences with, "okay?" weakens your message by making you sound unsure. 7. Smile when talking on the phone just as you would in person.
It adds warmth to your voice that radiates through the line. 8. Update your voicemail message daily. Personalizing your message with the date tells callers you are dependable. Remember to smile! 9. Maintain an appropriate personal space.
Between four feet and 18 inches is considered appropriate for business relationships. 10. Wear name badges high on your right shoulder. This makes them easy for others to read (especially when shaking hands). Avoid placing them low on your chest, pocket, or belt loop. Those places are embarrassing and uncomfortable for people to look.

May Luncheon Recap
'Streetsboro High School Seniors'
The Chamber honors graduating seniors...
The May luncheon had over 105 people in attendance to celebrate the seniors of Streetsboro High School. There were 66 outstanding high school seniors with GPA's of 3.0 or better honored for their accomplishments. Barbara Kachenko of RE/MAX Haven Realty sponsored the event, and generous donations were given to the students by L'Oreal and Huntington National Bank. Bob Coppedge, President of Simplex-IT, was the keynote speaker, who entertained the crowd and spoke on how we can keep up with our technical skills while companies are slashing their internal training budgets. He also highlighted the latest "hot" technologies facing our future and what we must all be prepared for. He stressed how soft skills are needed and why they seem to be so hard to obtain. We are very thankful for the many chamber members who sponsored students for this luncheon! The students had an enjoyable time and this is an event we will look forward to hosting again in the future!

DISASTER PREPAREDNESS
Are You Ready?
By Streetsboro Chief of Police Richard Taiclet
Are you ready to survive a disaster or any type of emergency? Are you prepared for the unexpected? Preparing makes sense. Get ready now. In the event of an emergency, you must learn how to protect yourself and your family against all types of hazards. Each citizen has the responsibility to protect themselves and their family. By knowing what to do before, during and after such an event. You are the first line of defense during a disaster. The second tier of the emergency management system is the county's department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. Portage County has an excellent system in place to respond to such an occurrence. However, between the time of a disaster and activation of this agency, ordinary citizens must respond to help their families and neighbors. The city of Streetsboro has a disaster plan in place and information is available to inform its residents on how to prepare and react to a disaster. Basic information that is common to all hazards is available to help create and maintain an emergency plan and disaster supply kit. Pamphlets and publications are available at City Hall and the Police Department. Included is information on how to assemble a disaster supply kit for families to survive following a disaster in the event they must rely on their own resources. Consideration is also given for persons with disabilities or special needs, caring for pets and plans for the workplace. There are many government web sites which provide a wealth of knowledge on disaster preparedness topics. Two of importance are www.ready.gov and www.fema.gov.
