Hello :
The weather has finally returned to the beautiful San Diego weather that we all know and love and, in turn, players are returning to the courts to play tennis. The mornings have been colder than usual but for those of us who missed playing for what seemed like the whole of December due to the rains the cold is nothing to complain about. Whether for reasons like New Year's resolutions, league play starting back full force, tournament season starting up again, high school tryouts around the corner, or just enjoying this great sport of tennis, it's great to see so many out on the courts!
We are pleased to announce that Dean Hodsman has joined our Meridian Tennis team. Dean is a recent graduate from Cal State San Marcos, with a degree in Communications. While completing his degree, he has worked as a tennis pro for 5+ years creating specific curriculum to instruct children, teens and adults in the fundamental skills of tennis, as well being a Developmental Coach, responsible for teaching advanced competitive strategies to Junior Tennis Players for tournament play. He was a ranked player while playing at La Costa Canyon HS, making the Division-1 All-CIF team and winning the Avocado League Doubles championships. He has already been running our minis & junior programs, adult clinics, and is available for individual lessons. We are excited that he has joined us and look forward to incorporating his talents in our coaching programs. Stop by and say hi. See you on the courts!

What's New in Professional Tennis
Over the past few weeks the Australian Open has been going on. As it seems every year there are always a few new players who are able to make it through. Although they won't usually steal the limelight completely away from the top players like Nadal and Federer, or Clijsters and Wozniacki, they can cause a stir of excitement. This year's tournament has already created a lot of buzz. We witnessed the longest women's match in the open era lasting over 4 hours for three sets (4h44mins). The final set ended up being 16-14 with Francesca Schiavone winning over Svetlana Kuznetsova. Both players had chances to win making it even more dramatic for those of us watching the live seesaw match. It was a match to remember.
On the men's side of the draw two new players came through to the second week in the tournament. The first is a young 20 year old, Milos Raonic, from Canada, who reached the fourth round before falling short against David Ferrer, who then went on to beat Nadal in the quarter finals. Raonic's biggest upset was over Mikhail Youzhny the 10th seed in the tournament. It was an admirable performance considering he also had to play three rounds of qualifying to get into the tournament. His next tournament will be in a few weeks in San Jose, CA. It should be fun to follow his progress for the rest of the year. Raonic started the week ranked 152 in the world and ended his tournament being ranked inside the top 100; not a bad tournament to start out the year.
The second player who caused some buzz is a 22 year old Alexandr Dolgopolov, from Ukraine who reached the quarter finals before putting up a great fight against Andy Murray. He has an unorthodox style of play, but was very effective in frustrating his opponents into submission. He was able to beat two seeded players - Jo Wilfried-Tsonga in the third round, and Robin Soderling the number 4th ranked player in the world. His last name seemed to cause every announcer trouble, each with a different variation of his name. Brad Gilbert finally conceded trying and dubbed him "Dougie".
It's great to have the professional tennis season back and I hope this year turns out to be as exciting as last year. If tennis continues to be fun we must be doing something right.
Thanks again for all your continued support.
Come by and say hi! Matt Copland

Hitting with More Topspin
When we watch the pros play, many of us think they hit each ball perfectly; that is, fast and low over the net. However, this is not the case. In fact, the opposite is true. They hit with a tremendous amount of topspin, giving them large margins for error. The next time you are watching professional tennis, watch more closely. You will see rally after rally of heavy topspin, with most shots clearing the net by 3 or 4 feet. Rafael Nadal takes this concept to the extreme but that doesn't minimize the fact that this is the way all professionals are playing modern day tennis. Take this technique and apply it to your own game. Hit with more spin and less pace. You will find your play to be more consistent and just as effective.
See you on the courts! | |
