Hello :
The year is passing by so quickly, with Thanksgiving already passed, and now Christmas decorations are up! November was an interesting month with weather in the 90's, then rain, and now weather in the 50's. When it gets cold you can really tell who the die-hard tennis players are because they don't seem to be affected by weather. Hope we see you out there!
The professional tennis season is also coming to a close. The ladies tour has already wrapped up for the year and won't start up again until the New Year, with Kim Clijsters winning the WTA Championships. The men's tour will have their Championships concluding this week. It is fitting that the final men's match will be between world #1 Rafael Nadal going against world #2 Roger Federer in London. They have not played against each other since 9 May 2010, with Rafa winning 6-4, 7-6 in Madrid on clay. The best two players in the world playing the final match of the year - couldn't ask for anything better than that! The last event on the men's tour, the Davis Cup final, is next week in Belgrade, Serbia between Serbia and France. This may be anticlimactic after the Federer-Nadal match but it still should be good tennis.
Then everything starts up again the first week in January in Australia and the Far East. The first major tournament, the Australian Open, will commence in the middle of January. Let the tennis season begin! See you on the courts!

How Can You Make Practice Fun?
Tennis is a very repetitive sport and to get really good at it you have to hit thousands of balls over and over again. This can get very monotonous if you are not working on specific things to improve. One of the first ways to liven up a practice is to work on more than one skill. If you practice just one shot over and over, you can become mentally and physically tired and this could easily result in an injury. For example, a player might want to improve their drive topspin forehand. You might hit hundreds of balls, repeating the same swing with very little break in-between. This is a good way to reinforce the muscle memory needed to learn the stroke; however, you can quickly become tired or frustrated, with the results of the practice deteriorating rapidly, and soon enough you won't be enjoying the process of learning.
A better solution would be to practice two or three shots during each session. For example, hitting forehands and backhands helps even the load on the body and can help prevent overuse injuries. Having more than one thing to work on can also help you stay more focused and can bring back the fun aspect of learning. Another way to keep practice fun is to try playing different shots with different spins, or alternating topspin with slice, or hitting every ball past the service box or within the service box.
Tennis is a difficult game and the more you are willing to try new things, the more knowledge you will have of what works and what doesn't work. In the end, tennis is what you make it; having a plan before you practice should increase your chances of having fun when you play. If you need suggestions, come ask one of us and we'll be happy to help.
Thanks again for all your continued support.

Want a Better Serve? Here are a few quick tips.
Having a good serve is extremely important if you want to become a successful tennis player. It is also the only shot that you control completely. It is a good idea to take a quick second to prepare yourself, think about where you want to place the serve; most often, it is a good idea to serve to your opponent's backhand. Also, make sure you have a good toss. Remember, if you don't like your toss simply catch the ball, regroup and try again. If you have to move your feet in order to hit the serve or are off balance after you hit the serve most likely you should have caught the toss and started again.
Next time you are at the club take 15 minutes and practice your serve. It will be well worth your time.
Keep up the practice!

Burning Off Those Extra Thanksgiving Calories I saw an advertisement the other day claiming the average Thanksgiving dinner is 3000 calories...I started thinking about all the second and third servings of mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, pumpkin pie, etc. that I inevitably force myself to consume each year...I am beginning to think the 3000 calories was a major understatement! So, I decided to search online for how many calories are burned playing tennis, and here is what I found: - for a 135 pound person, 354 calories are burned for an hour of doubles and 472 calories are burned during an hour of singles
- for a 155 pound person, 422 calories are burned during an hour of doubles and 563 calories are burned during an hour of singles
- for a 185 pound person, 490 calories are burned during that hour of doubles and 654 calories are burned during the hour of singles.
This data leads me to the following conclusion - skip the weekly doubles match and go play some singles this week! We will all benefit from the extra calorie loss when the next round of holiday meals come up next month. See you on the courts! | |
