Hello  :

Is it summer yet? The coldest July in San Diego since 1933! Maybe we shouldn't complain as we can still play tennis, despite this gloomy weather, but where is the sun?

Well, our summer camps are in full swing, with Landon taking the lead, and Daniel assisting. The kids are getting a lot of attention and we can see their excitement and improvement each day. We continue to run our clinics for minis, juniors, high school & adults so come on out!

Have you heard about the Winners Tennis ladies spring champions! Read about them in Matt's column (below).

The US Open Series

We are just coming out of that lull period following Wimbledon when it seems like everything else is happening EXCEPT tennis - World Cup Soccer 2010, Tour de France, the PGA British Open Championship, the  ridiculous LeBron James Show, MLB trade rumors, the NFL trade deadline, gearing up for Fantasy Football, and the San Diego Padres hitting their stride!

And what about the Winners Tennis ladies team who swept the league, undefeated, over 100 points ahead of the rest of the pack! They deserve some individual mention & big congratulations - Martina Chapkis, Suzie Concors, Sandy Gereaux, Cindy Hesse, Crista Hubbard, Cora King, Em Malott, Danielle Moore, Mary Jo Preti, Gracie Snow-Jones, and Sandi Weaver. From week to week we heard their determination, they never wavered from their resolve to win and stick together en force. Way to go! Their success should be motivation for everyone to work hard and believe in winning.

The US Open Series started last week in Atlanta (tournament won by Mardy Fish); the Bank of the West Classic (WTA) currently being played at Stanford, CA; the Farmers Classic (ATP) currently being played in Los Angeles; WTA at the Mercury Insurance Open from La Costa 31 July - 8 Aug (if you get a chance to go, keep an eye out for several of our tournament group players who will be serving as ball persons & scorekeepers); ATP at the Legg Mason Classic in Washington DC 31 July - 8 Aug; the Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open from Cincinnati, Ohio 9 Aug - 15 Aug; the ATP Rogers Masters from Toronto, Canada 9 Aug - 15 Aug; the WTA Rogers Cup from Montreal, Canada 16 Aug - 22 Aug; the ATP  Western & Southern Financial Group Masters from Cincinnati, Ohio 16 Aug - 22 Aug; the Pilot Penn from Yale in New Haven, Connecticut 22 Aug - 28 Aug; and finally the US Open 30 Aug - 12 Sept. Going into the US Open Series the top 5 women are S Williams, Jankovic, V Williams, Wozniacki, Stosur, and the top 5 men are Nadal, Djokovic, Federer, Murray, Soderling . Serena & Rafa are significantly ahead of the rest but everyone else is extremely close it points, with those behind them not too far off. It should be an exciting period of tennis!

Thanks again for all your continued support.

Come by and say hi!

The Mental Side of Tennis

As we all know, the mental side of tennis is extremely important key to having success while competing in matches. Here are a few little tips to help become a better player mentally.

1. Play to Win - Not to Avoid Losing.

Many players make the mistake of going into a game desperately wanting to avoid losing. This is a common problem and it is completely understandable. No one wants to lose. However, by pre-programming yourself this way, you are actually increasing your chances of losing the match, simply because you are so worried about it. Go into each game playing to win and you'll notice a big difference in your scores.

2. Getting Rid of Nerves.

This is a huge problem, even for the best players in the game. It's natural to be nervous before a match, but if nerves are crippling your performance, it's time to do something about it. You can use the above tip to take the pressure off by not thinking about losing and there are other great strategies that can be employed to help you become less nervous. You may want to consider contacting a sport therapist if nerves are really hampering your performance.

3. Set Yourself Up to Succeed.

One of the best ways to win is simply to picture yourself doing it. Play the match in your head beforehand and think about how you are going to handle each shot. Program yourself to win and chances are, you will. It can take a few times to get the technique down, but visualization can be incredibly useful when you're getting mentally prepared for a game. By reducing negativity, you'll be setting yourself up to win - not lose.

4. Don't Let Intimidation Worry You.

If you're playing a more experienced player, it is only natural to be a bit intimidated. However, if you let this go unchecked, it will only get worse. Remember, they have the same fears you do, and in fact, they may be even more worried about the game than you are. Take every match as it comes and don't think about how good the other player is. Focus on your own game and let it fall into place naturally.

5. Never forget to practice.

One of the best ways to ensure that you're mentally tough is to practice your game - both the physical and mental sides. By staying sharp and being on top of your game, you'll naturally be more confident. Take the time to read about mental strategies and employ them whenever you can, both on and off the court. As you train, you'll be getting mentally and physically stronger and you'll be able to take on any challenge.

Keep up the Practice!

Poaching

Doubles is a game of aggressiveness. The more active you are at the net, the better your volleys will be. Often when at the net with our partner on the baseline, we can get into the habit of standing still while the cross-court rally goes by. It is really important that the net player be involved to make points shorter and easier to win. It's easier to cut off a volley if your feet are used to making the move.

Try poaching one or two points in the beginning games of a match to get into this rhythm. First, watch your opponent's racket face as they take their racquet back for the return. Right as they begin their hitting motion, split step and take off. The majority of returns come cross court so it should be a perfect play to take the volley right at the other net person for an easy point. In addition, poaching and being more active at the net can be mentally exhausting for your opponents. It will cause them to second guess where their return should go, which gives you the advantage.

If you feel you need help or just have some questions, come ask one of us. We're here to help. Good luck and have fun!

See you on the courts!
