The Championships Wimbledon
Wimbledon made the headlines even before the tournament had started by electing to place Roger Federer as the top seed of the tournament ahead of the current number one, Rafael Nadal. Last year Nadal missed the tournament due to injury. Maybe they are showing deference to Federer being the defending champion? Maybe the decision was made to draw attention to tennis while competing with World Cup Soccer for viewership? A bit of a controversy, none the less.
The men's singles and doubles tournaments started with a bang. There was drama from the very first match of the tournament with defending champion Roger Federer almost going out in the first round to Alejandro Falla (CLB) ranked 65 in the world, before rallying to get back into the match from 2 sets to love down, to pull off a dramatic comeback win, 6-0 in the fifth. Then we witnessed the longest match in history with John Isner (USA) vs. Nicholas Mahut (FRA). It took place over three days and the gravity of the match continued to build the longer it went. Finally on the third day the match was completed ending 70-68 with Isner coming out on top. Undoubtedly, both players will be remembered for this marathon match. Rafael Nadal did not have an easy road to the second week of Wimbledon. When Nadal won the French Open two weeks ago he did not drop a set and never really looked challenged. Wimbledon has been a different story so far. In his second and third round matches he has had to come from 2 sets to 1 down. He was able to show his competitive fortitude and comeback strong to finish off both his opponents, Robin Haase (NED) ranked 151 and Philipp Petzschner (GER) ranked 39.
When you have the two best players in the world taken to five sets so early in the tournament it makes for some drama. The total number of five set matches through three rounds is 27, with the most notable one being the Isner vs Mahut match. The drama was not just in the singles but the men's doubles too. The number one seeds Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonijic were extended to the limit in the first round eventually winning 15-13 in the fifth. However, in the second round they were not quite so lucky, falling 8-6 in the fifth to two British players who are relative unknowns - Chris Eaton ranked 176 in doubles and Dominic Inglot ranked 204 in doubles. The total number of five set doubles matches through two rounds is 11, with the Bryan brothers still to play their second round match.
As of 30June, so many top seeds out:
Roger Federer (1) - men's singles Venus Williams (2) - women's singles Nestor-Zimonjic (1) - men's doubles Bryan-Bryan (2) - men's doubles Williams-Williams (1) - women's doubles Zimonjic-Stosur (1) - mixed doubles
It is amazing when real upsets occur and the excitement that is created around any competitive sport. If you have never played a truly competitive match, enter a tournament and you will start to appreciate the emotions that come over you when you achieve something you are not expected to do.
Thanks again for all your continued support.
Come by and say hi! Matt Copland

Cut Down on Unforced Errors
One of the best ways to improve your tennis game is to cut down your unforced errors. Here are a few tips to cut down your errors while playing doubles. 1. At the start of the match when you are still trying to get loose and warmed up try not to hit at 100% of your power. Keep your pace around 75% that will increase your control and help gain confidence while you are trying to feel your opponents out. 2. Get a high percentage of first serves in. When you get your first serves in it tends to keep your opponent further back in the court which gives you a chance to get to the net and take control of the point. 3. Try not to force a winner. When you are paying a point your goal is to set either you or your partner up for the perfect shot. If you try to hit a winner when you are not set up or not in a good position you will most likely end up with an unforced error. Instead, keep trying to set up the point if it takes one shot great but if not try to have the patience to wait until the perfect shot is there to attack. Keep up the Practice! |

Summer Training
For most juniors and high school players, summer is the time to perfect your game and improve for the upcoming year. How many times have you taken a lesson or practiced a particular shot in a drill, only to have it let you down in a match. The match environment is entirely different from the practice environment. That is why it is important to play plenty of matches during the summer to become accustomed to this intensity. The best way to do this is by entering tournaments. And with school out for the summer, there are tournaments to enter every week so there is no excuse not to play. Sign up for a tournament that is best suited for your level of play. Novice tournaments are great for kids looking to play more consistently. Satellites are perfect for competitive tennis players. Finally, the open level tournaments are suited for varsity level players. When game day arrives, it is important to warm up for about 45 minutes an hour or two prior to match time. Arrive ready to play and give it your all. Again, it is important to play many matches during the summer so sign up for multiple tournaments. Try to work on specific goals in each match, such as hitting to your opponents backhand, attacking the net, or just keeping more balls in play.
Come ask one of us how to approach the match. We're here to help. Good luck and have fun!
See you on the courts! |
