The French Open Roland-Garros

Roland Garros, the second major Grand Slam tennis event of the year has arrived! Over the past five years Rafael Nadal has dominated the event, winning the previous four years until he lost early in the 4th round last year. That loss opened the door for Roger Federer to win his first French Open title. This year, it appears that the King of Clay is back. At 23 years of age, Nadal is looking like his spry old self. After healing and taking some timely breaks in his playing schedule, he appears to be back on form and amazingly, has even shown improvement in his game! He made it to two semi-finals in the first two Masters series tournaments, Indian Wells and Miami. Along the way while in Indian Wells, he and fellow countryman Marc Lopez won the men's doubles title as wild card entries!
However, it was not until the Monte Carlo tournament that everyone was convinced that Nadal was back to his imperious best. He entered the Monte Carlo Masters series event having previously won the last 5 years. On his way to the title he was able to dismantle three opponents, only giving up one game in each match. He dispatched three other Spanish players who usual fair very well on clay, Juan Carlos Ferrero, David Ferrer, and Fernando Verdasco. With this, his first tournament back on clay this season and with his current level of tennis, he has risen above everyone else. What makes this achievement even more amazing is that with this win, Nadal now has won the Monte Carlo Masters title for 6 consecutive years. This is an open era record for a specific tournament that no other player has achieved. If he can sustain this level of play, he is by far the favorite to regain the Roland Garros title.
This was just the beginning. A week later Nadal went on to win the Rome Masters title, beating David Ferrer in the final. He then took a week off skipping Barcelona, where he was the defending champion from last year. His last tournament before Roland Garros was the Madrid Masters; again he took the title beating Roger Federer 6-4, 7-6. They had not played against each other for an entire year, but Nadal was back to causing Federer fits on clay. Nadal is undefeated this clay court season at 15-0.
A Masters series event is the second highest tournament that a player can win. The first tier tournaments are the Grand Slams - Australia Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and U.S. Open. Nadal now has won 18 Masters series events in his career. Andre Agassi previously held the record at 17.
Last year Nadal was beset by injuries in the middle of what could have been his best year. He suffered knee and abdominal injuries, which sidelined him for almost 4 months. The timing of his knee injury affected his performance in Roland Garros, and forced him to withdraw from Wimbledon, and the abdominal injury affected his play at the U.S. Open and the World Tour finals. This year, to guard against the risk of being injured again, Nadal has wisely modified his schedule. His tentative tournament schedule for the next 4 tournaments is:
  • 4/12/10 Monte Carlo, (clay) (56 draw) Winner
  • 4/25/10 Rome, (clay) (56 draw) Winner
  • 5/9/10 Madrid, (clay) (56 draw) Winner
  • 5/23/10 Roland Garros, France (clay, 128 draw) In action
  • 6/7/10 AEGON championships, Queens (grass, 56 draw)
  • 6/21/10 Wimbledon, England (grass, 128 draw)
  • 8/9/10 Rogers Cup, Canada (hard court, 56 draw)

Despite his obvious talent and skill, his playing style and unceasing will to compete is why some have questioned his longevity in the sport because of the toll on his body and risk of injury. Once he is into a tournament, he ends up going the length towards the finals. It also doesn't help that most of the matches are played back to back. On the other hand, he looks physically strong and seems to have made enough adjustments in his game to play all-surface, all-court tennis.
Currently, Nadal is back to number two in the world rankings, and has been able to win all the Masters series events on clay. If he performs well at Roland Garros and Wimbledon he will challenge Roger Federer for the world number one ranking. It will certainly be exciting to watch things unfold!
Thanks again for all your continued support.

Come by and say hi!

Keys to the Low Volley

One of the toughest shots to hit while approaching the net is the low volley. This can be an extremely difficult shot, but if handled the right way not an impossible shot.

The biggest key to this shot is to get low, while keeping your racket head up. When the ball is hit low, try to get down low with your legs and not just your back. The second thing to the low volley is not to try for the impossible shot. The goal for this shot should be to get it back in play, hopefully in a spot to set you up for another volley.

This volley is a difficult shot but if you remember to get low, keep your racket head up, and not try for the perfect shot you can get through it, getting closer to the net and hopefully, winning the point!

Keep up the Practice!

At the NAIA National Tournament

If someone were to ask you where is the largest tennis facility in the U.S., what would be your answer? Most of your guesses would be California, Florida, or Texas. Wrong. The largest tennis court site in the United States is located in the least likely of all places - Mobile, Alabama!  This past week, as a graduating senior at Point Loma Nazarene University, I participated in the NAIA collegiate nationals at this location. Few tournaments compare to this and even fewer people have the chance to ever play in an event similar to this. The lineup includes the top 24 men's and women's teams in the country. The first day of play involves 3 doubles and 6 singles matches in each match-up. You do the math...that's 216 matches being played in the opening day! While this is an American college tournament, it might as well be considered an international event. Almost every lineup is filled with foreign players. Many teams do not even list an American on their roster. To add to the excitement of this event, many of these players have previous ATP tour experience. This high level of tennis is being played in 85-95 degree weather with 75-85% humidity. All of these factors combine to make this an incredibly competitive and exciting event.

Again, very few tennis tournaments compare to the NAIA nationals in Alabama. This experience clearly makes all the hard work and practice worthwhile. So, if you are in high school or are an up and coming junior, stick with it and continue to play as much as you can. Maybe you will be able to have this unbelievable experience and play in this event.

See you on the courts!
