Specialty drugs are used to treat chronic medical conditions and genetic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis and cancer. These specialty drugs can be expensive, averaging between $1,000 and $1,500 per month. And the underlying medical condition can present unique challenges to patients. Treatments can be complex and confusing. Specialty drugs may require very specific dosing, close monitoring and special handling or refrigeration. It is normal for people who use a specialty drug to have questions and need extra support.
Specialty drugs are a covered benefit under your SCDA Group Medical Plan. BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina has recently selected CuraScript to handle your specialty pharmacy needs. CuraScript is an independent company that provides specialty pharmacy services. On behalf of BlueCross, CuraScript will assist in the administration of the specialty pharmacy benefit.
Beginning April 1, 2012, CuraScript Specialty Pharmacy will dispense and manage the specialty drug portion of your prescription drug benefit. You can click here to view the list of drugs that must be filled by CuraScript for the charges to be covered.
Some benefits of CuraScript are:
· Confidential and convenient delivery of your specialty drug to the location of your choice - when you need it and at no additional charge
· Personal attention from patient care advocates and easy access to pharmacists and other health experts 24 hours a day, seven days a week
· Help with refilling prescriptions, filing claims and any prior authorizations you need
If you have an active prescription with remaining refills at Caremark Specialty Pharmacy, you will receive a letter in the mail telling you:
- That you can fill your specialty drug prescriptions through CuraScript
- That your prescriptions will be transferred to CuraScript
- How to contact CuraScript if you need to call them directly
Please note that any prescription filled at Caremark Specialty Pharmacy on or after April 1 will no longer be covered. On behalf of BlueCross, Caremark currently assists in the administration of the program. Caremark is an independent company that provides pharmacy benefits management.
Prescriptions for non-specialty drugs (those on the Preferred Drug List) will still be available from a participating retail or mail-order pharmacy as indicated in your benefit plan. Remember that the preferred drug and specialty drug lists are subject to change. The most current lists are available at www.southcarolinablues.com.
