SC Medicaid
Everyone is well aware of the issues involving Medicaid, the Medicaid Agency and DentaQuest.  Please note that the SCDA is well aware of the issues and working very closely with the agency to resolve outstanding operational issues. A letter was sent a few days ago regarding this and is posted again on our website in case you did not receive.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina (BCBSSC)
The SCDA has received calls regarding BCBSSC beginning electronic funds transfer (EFT).  BCBSSC is not mandating dentists begin receiving EFTs or electronic remits. This is still an option and not a requirement.

Medicare Advantage Plans
In May of this year, the SCDA sent all members a letter regarding Medicare Advantage Dental Plans.  Dentists were receiving letters that even though they did not participate in the network, they may not be able to balance bill above what the insurance company reimburses.  Effectively, they were saying that by treating the patient you agree to their network without a contract.

The SCDA has worked on this issue and was recently informed that you are allowed to balance bill if you are not a participating network provider. As a dentist, you should have received a letter from Avesis regarding this update.
Improper Use of Social Media Could Lead to Heavy Fines Under HIPAA/HITECH
New laws around the HIPAA privacy act and security changes are affecting your dental office.  Do you know if you are in compliance?  If you have a computer in your office, then you can't afford to miss this seminar.  Sweeping changes to HIPAA privacy rules can lead to heavy fines for non-compliance - not to mention bad press.

The September 10th seminar was full and a huge success, so the SCDA has added a second seminar date of Friday, November 12th. Come learn about the new requirements and walk away with the information you need to keep your practice covered.

SCDA's Amalgam Task Force
The SCDA has partnered with DHEC to recognize dentists who voluntarily install amalgam separators with a certificate and by placing the member's name on the SCDA website. October 31, 2010 is the first checkpoint date that we will send a list.  Please be proactive and have your name on that list.  Let's avoid costly mandates.  Purchase an amalgam separator today and contact Mark Brown at the SCDA office at 1-800-327-2598 or by email at brownm@scda.org to let him know you have done so.
Sincerely,
