World Engineering Forum 2012 in Ljubljana

World Engineering Forum 2012 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, held on the theme "Sustainable Construction for People'' will be a top-level meeting of the most prominent representatives of engineering from all continents placing Slovenia on the global building map. The objective of the Forum is to link the profession, economy and politics in order to renew launching of the building sector facing one of the heaviest crises in the history. In the decades to come, the main design and construction development power will be characterized by a shortage of energy and environmental awareness. Our task is to continue the tradition of the last World Engineers' Convention in Geneva under the topic "Engineers' Power the World".

Can You Keep A Secret?

Mikron Theatre Company is again touring a show that is close to our interests. St Martha's Careers Fair June 2012 - Can you help

On 29th June, St Martha's Senior School, Hadley Wood will be holding a Careers Fair for Year 10 and Year 12 students and would like to invite representative from WES

.

This is a fantastic opportunity for their students to explore different careers options and find out how to get into different professions.

We would like WES to run a stall and if possible, provide some literature that students can take away with them. Those running the stalls should also be

prepared to answer our students' questions. These might vary from questions about how you got involved with the business to questions about the daily tasks or what kinds of progression there might be within the business.

We very much hope that WES will take part in our second Careers Fair, and help us to promote this successful and enjoyable annual event for our students and delegates to look forward to.

If you would like to represent WES at this event please get in touch with the WES Office and also Dawn Williams at St Martha's School. .

Mastermind - looking for WES Contestants!

Legendary BBC quiz show Mastermind is looking for contenders for the new series. If you fancy yourself as a bit of a general knowledge expert, why not apply?

Mastermind is widely regarded as the most rigorous and intellectually challenging of British quiz shows and has become one of television's most enduring successes. It would be fantastic if somebody associated with the Women's Engineering Society made it to the televised stages!

And contrary to popular opinion, the Mastermind team is not looking for experts. It wants people who are prepared to become experts in the subjects that they love. So whether your passion is Leonardo da Vinci or Leonardo diCaprio, maybe you should think about applying - the list really is as long and as varied as the interests of the British public.

Email
or call 07713 315443 (standard network rates apply) for more information, or apply online at bbc.co.uk/mastermind. Auditions are taking place nationwide over the next few months.

If you would like to brave the famous Mastermind chair then we look forward to hearing from you.

And finally....

"Women Into Engineering" event at The JCB Academy - Female Engineers wanted.

This very successful is being run again this year for four days compared with last year's two days. The format will be very similar with the participants being eleven year old girls from primary schools in Staffordshire and Derbyshire. The success of last year was significantly helped by female engineering apprentices, undergraduates and graduates from our Challenge Partners and other organisations, who interfaced with the girls and gave them short insights about their own work and careers. They also helped to "mentor" the teams as they set about their activities.
The event will be run on 2/3/5/6 July with two separate sessions each day and with a new group of children for each session - a total of eight sessions overall. We think that we need about five engineers per session to support.

Can you help?

You could come to one or two sessions or every session to suit your availability. For the first session of the day you would need to arrive at 08.30 (finishes at 12.30 approx) and the second session arrive at 12.30 (finishes at 16.15 approx). Lunch will be provided. Your help in making this a successful event again would be most appreciated.

Contact Bob Pendlebury
or Hayley Lowndes as soon as possible.

Internship and Training Opportunities

Intelligentsia, International, Inc. based in southwest Florida offer internship and training opportunities to international and American students and graduates in a wide range of technical disciplines (engineering, science, IT, water management, agriculture, business, marketing, economics, journalism, architecture, etc.).

The programs they offer are managed as a short-term experience (typically 3 to 6 months) with number of participants limited to 15. This setting allows participants broaden their knowledge and experiences through direct work exposures in a variety of technical assignments in a multi-discipline and multi-cultural setting (they have hosted students from more than 60 different countries during the past 10 years).

The technical training is combined with educational and recreational tours, seminars and community involvement to develop well-rounded graduates, prepared to apply their skills to problem solving situation in real job environments. A complete list of projects they have to offer can be found at our website, here is just one example for all - together with University of Florida, Edison State College and the U.S. Department of Energy, we initiated research and educational programs related to biofuels, sustainable biomass farming and fuel conversion systems. These systems should balance various economic, social and ecological needs of Florida.

They would be happy to receive resumes and applications from current students and recent graduates, who are seeking to undertake high quality training or internship.

For more information and to see some of their currently offered positions visit the website.

Fabian Women's Network Event

There aren't enough women in science and engineering, and the attrition rate is high. Why does this matter? And what are the reasons for the gaping gap and what can we do to address them? In this Fabian Women's Network event, the panel of speakers will dissect the factors and offer ideas of ways to tap the potential of individuals in an unequal world.

Careers Event - can you help

We have had this request from Townley Grammar School in Bexleyheath

We are a girl's grammar school with a co-educational sixth form and I
write with reference to a Work Related Learning/Careers event that we
are providing for our Year 10 students on 21st and 22nd June 2012.

This event and other activities throughout the year are to take the
place of Work Experience which is now offered to our Year 12 students.
The essence of the event will be on the working world and the
training, skills and qualities that are required.

The second day (22nd June) is being kindly supported by invited career
professionals. The format we have in place, is a Work Related
Learning Fair attended by a variety of professionals representing a
broad range of careers, this will be a base for the representatives
and will be held in our main school hall throughout the day. The idea
as with our previous fairs is to inform students of how they can
achieve in a particular career path, for example, courses they need to
study/routes into chosen careers etc. We have many students who are
thinking about a career using science and although they may have
general ideas of possible professions, it would be very interesting
for them to find out how much is available to them should they study
the sciences.

Running alongside the Fair we have Guest Speakers/Representatives who
will offer a variety of elements such as Workshops, Presentations and
Question and Answer Sessions. These will be held in either our
Theatre or Sports Hall, depending upon the guest's requirements.

I am sure that our students would very much enjoy the opportunity to
speak to a representative from your Education Outreach Team. You are
more than welcome to spend the day with us and take part in the Fair
and/or provide a talk to our students; we will happily provide
refreshments and a lunch

If you can help or would like to take part please contact Jennie Kay, Careers Coordinator by email or telephone 020 8304 8311
