Women and Leadership: Closing the Gender Gap

Mentoring and Leadership

On 20th July a group of ladies (and some gents!) from a variety of STEM related occupations attended a workshop on Mentoring and Leadership in Cambridge. Led by MentorSET manager, Jacqui Hogan, they were introduced to what mentoring is (and isn't!), the mentoring lifecycle, roles of mentors and mentees, and the relevance of mentoring to leadership. The workshop also included a lively session during which attendees were given the opportunity to practice their mentoring skills with each other. We would like to thank the Department of Biochemistry at Cambridge University for kindly providing the room and refreshments.

We have 3 more workshops planned currently:

August 23rd (London)

October 11th (Cambridge)

October 31st (Bristol).

For further details and to book, please go to the events page on the MentorSET website. These are all free to WES members

Equality and Diversity; Good Practice for the Construction Sector

The Equality and Human Rights Commission published a new report - 'Equality and Diversity : Good practice for the Construction Sector'.  This study was commissioned by the EHRC on behalf of the Construction Leadership Diversity Forum, and its final report sets out the benefits of having a diverse workforce in terms of ethnicity, gender, disability and age.  In summary, it says that tackling these gaps in its workforce will help the construction industry to address its skills shortage by employing people from the widest possible pool of talent. Overcoming Gender Barriers in Science

The Science and Development Network have published a report Spotlight on Overcoming gender barriers in science.

Despite gradual progress in gender balance in academia and in the workforce, women remain under-represented in the sciences in developing countries.

  • How wide is the gender gap in science?
  • What are the main barriers to women's advancement?
  • And what can be done to overcome them?

Their Spotlight explores these questions through opinions, features and the latest facts and figures, alongside key documents and useful links. Scientists, science educators and South Africa's Minister of Science and Technology offer their expert views on the problem.

They challenge enduring misconceptions about girls' aptitude for science, highlight the key role of education and explore how policies can help developing countries bridge the gender gap in science.

 Networking Women Conference

Networking Women

September 15th, The Oxford Centre, Oxford 9.30hrs - 16.30hrs

Sponsored by Natwest, Harris-Lipman, TBAC, Jennings, B-Line Business Supplies and B4 Business

Ever thought of running your own engineering practice? Or perhaps you have another great business idea.

"Believe you Can!" is a conference aimed specifically at women new to running their own business and start-up's.

Entitled "Believe you Can!" is a full day of top speakers, learning sessions, workshops and networking opportunities put together by a group of eight business women who all run their own successful companies.  Topics will include Brand Design, Networking, Finance, PR & Marketing, Goal Mapping, How to manage your Work Life Balance, Social Media, Networking and How to get the best from the Rest of Your Life.

"Putting together this conference has been an immensely satisfying experience. It's demonstrated a continuing need for women in business to come together, celebrate their achievements, support each other and form bonds that will far supersede the event date itself. By ensuring that all of the speakers are down to earth and easy to relate to, we are confident that delegates will leave with that wonderful energy known as inspiration. With inspiration, comes innovation and being a part of that is incredibly motivating. "Believe You Can", the name of the conference, is well and truly embedded in the underlying philosophy of this event", explained Lisa Cherry, co-founder of Networking Women.

Women and Leadership: Closing the Gender Gap

13 and 14 September 2011

Over the last 25 years the number of women in employment in the UK has increased by more than a third but in 2010 they still only made up 12.5% of corporate boards of FTSE 100 companies (Female FTSE board report 2010, Cranfield School of Management).

Concerns about the under-representation of women in leadership roles and the gender imbalance of corporate boards have prompted countries across the world to develop strategies that address these issues. Here, the UK Government recently published a report recommending a minimum of 25% female representation on boards by 2015.

Women also continue to be significantly under-represented in senior political roles. As highlighted by the Fawcett Society in the 2010 UK general election only 143 female MPs were elected out of 650. In the current cabinet only four of the 23 positions are held by women.

Why hold a conference?

This conference will bring together academics, policy makers and women leaders in politics, business, public and voluntary sectors.

Focusing on the experience of women who have achieved leadership roles it will consider strategies designed to increase the presence of women in senior posts both here and abroad.

The conference will offer delegates the opportunity to reflect on their career choice and be inspired by women leaders from across the business, public and voluntary sectors.

Who should attend?

Anyone with an interest in these issues is welcome to attend. We would particularly encourage participation from:

  • Women leaders in politics, business, public and voluntary sectors
  • Policy Makers
  • Early and mid-career women from all sectors
  • Academics
