WES held its first networking event of the year, 'Crossing Bridges' and it was a fantastic evening. We will be bringing you a report on the evening in next months newsletter.

Apprentice Scheme 2011

 

As of last week e2v launched their first social media recruitment campaign using Facebook and Twitter to recruit to their Apprenticeship scheme which is now open for applicants!

 

Many applicants for the apprenticeship scheme come straight from local schools and colleges,

so if you know anyone who may be interested then direct them to thier facebook page or just search Essex Apprenticeships on Facebook!

You do not need a login to view this page.

 

Don't forget if someone you refer joins e2v you are entitled to �500 in STARS vouchers*

 

If you are not a whizz in social media, then here is what you need to know:

 

  • The apprenticeship is for 3 years and is primarily for manufacturing and engineering
  •  Applicants must have 5 A-C grade GCSE's. Obtaining a B in Maths is compulsory.
  • You need a good understanding of science and engineering

ARE WOMEN CHANGING SCIENCE

 

Public Debate

 

on Wednesday 9th March 2011

7pm at Institute of Contemporary Arts

 

Leading scientific researchers and artists discuss the continuing under-representation of women in science. Vivienne Parry (science writer and BBC Radio 4 broadcaster) asks Britain's brightest thinkers: Professor Dame Sally C Davies (Chief Scientific Officer, Department of Health), Professor Uta Frith (Emeritus Professor of Cognitive Development, UCL), Professor Carol V Robinson (Royal Society Professor, Department of Chemistry, University of Oxford), Professor Mary Collins (Dean of Life Sciences, UCL) and Liliane Lijn (NASA artist in residence) whether women are changing science.

Tickets for the debate are available from the ICA (www.ica.org.uk) and will be accompanied by a limited-edition print version of Suffrage Science, a commemorative publication celebrating the collective contribution of women to life science over the past 100 years.

Global Marathon 2011

 

This years Global Marathon takes place between March 7-12, 2011. WES member, Teresa Schofield is

coordinating the UK participation. The Global Marathon becomes a place for connecting girls and women in engineering and technology who "meet" via live Internet chats, telephone conversations, webcasts and live events over the course of six days. Presenters and participants can join in the experience in any of six general regions including North America, Mexico/Latin America, UK/Europe, India, Africa/Middle East, and China. The Marathon provides a platform for encouraging and educating young women about the exciting opportunities in the fields of engineering and technology.

Tenure-track position in Statistics

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics of Universit� Laval invites applications for a tenure-track appointment in Statistics which would normally be at the Assistant Professor level. The start date for this position could be as early as July 1st, 2011.

 

Fonctions

 

Candidates must be able to teach (in French) courses in statistics to graduates and undergraduates, including service courses to large classes, to engage in a productive research program in pure or applied statistics, to apply for funding from the major granting bodies, to contribute to the management and promotion of the bachelor's degree in statistics, to recruit and supervise graduate students, to assist the Statistical consultation service of the department, and more generally to contribute to the development of statistics and to the promotion of the statistical team of Universit� Laval.

 

Selection criteria

 

Candidates must have obtained, or be close to obtaining, a PhD degree in statistics or an equivalent qualification ; they must demonstrate a strong potential for research in pure or applied statistics and for teaching ; and they must be able to communicate in French or be able to do so within a year. It will be considered advantageous to be able to work effectively with the group of researchers already in place and to have research interests that are complementary to those of the Chaire de recherche du Canada en �chantillonnage statistique et en analyse des donn�es or are in biostatistics.

Applications must include a CV, three letters of reference, an outline of the research program for the next three years together with the teaching philosophy of the candidate (not more than 3 pages), and up to two recent articles (preprint or off-print).
