It has been a very busy month for WES and as a result we have a packed newsletter.
The closing date for registrations for the WES Annual Conference is soon. The speakers include Hazel Randal, Dr Numbe L. Ewald, Lean Doody, Jackie Carpenter and others. Go to the conference website for full details. Don't forget the WES Annual Gala Dinner held on the Friday evening. This year it will be held in the beautiful Cutlers Hall. This is include din the conference programme, but if your company would like to send anyone to the dinner we have tables available. Please contact the WES office for details.

Equality Act comes into force |
From October 1st 2010 most of the Equality Act will come into force. The Act replaces existing anti-discrimination such as the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 and the Sex Discrimination Act 1975. For more information on the changes click here. |
Women's National Commission |
As part of the changes to the Government Equalities Office (GEO) non departmental public bodies it was announced on 14th October 2010 that the Women's National Commission will be closed down and its core functions brought in to the GEO. The Women's National Commission was set up in 1969 as the national, independent organisation to present the views of women to the government. For more details click here

Ingenious Women: Communicating a Passion For Enginnering |
Jaguar Land Rover Project Engineer, and WES Company Member Danielle Clissold has been selected as 1 of 20 women engineers onto the 'Ingenious Women :Communicating a Passion For Engineering' Project being run by the UKRC in association with the Royal Academy of Engineering. The six-month project aims to raise the profile of female engineers and help develop competence and confidence as public speakers and communicators to a range of audiences. The project has some exciting, interesting and highly experienced media mentors from the world of tv, radio and journalism. The candidates will be trained in all media types including blogging, twitter, Second Life as well as TV & radio. You can follow and comment on Danielle's blog or follow her on twitter.

Ford are recruiting graduate engineers. |
Ford's research and development centre in Essex is the country's largest automotive engineering facility and is one of four UK Ford sites covering research, development and manufacture of low-CO2 technology for cars and commercial vehicles.
Backed by the European Investment Bank, Ford has announced a £1.5 billion investment in these four UK facilities over the next 5 years, targeting projects to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions
Ford has a long standing commitment to encouraging women to consider careers in engineering, demonstrated through annual sponsorship of the Ford WISE prize, and particularly welcomes applications from female graduate engineers to its current opportunities.

WES Annual Conference 2010 |
WES Annual Conference 19th-20th November 2010
WES Doris Gray Student Conference 20th-21st November 2010
Both conferences are being held in Sheffield this year. We are overlapping the two events in order to give both student and qualified engineers an opportunity to network and learn from each other.
Registration is open but closes on 29th October 2010.

WES Annual General Meeting
The WES AGM was held at Aston University, Birmingham on the 18th September 2010. It was well attended by WES members and was the first outing for the new Presidents hat! Thanks go to Betty McCarthy for creating it.

My Sparkling Career
This WES event was held after the AGM at Aston University. Angella Kelly chaired the event and talks were given by Professor Julia King, Rebecca Robinson and Georgina Stanistreet.
They gave really inspiring talks about their careers and lives in engineering. More about them will be in the next issue of the journal. |
