Industry Enterprise Day

WES Member Angella Kelly works for Discovery4 as an Educational Coordinator.  In June 2009, she was able to coordinate the Engineering & Aerospace Enterprise Day at Kennet Secondary School in Thatcham, West Berkshire. The Industry Enterprise Day catered for 280 students. Professionals from the Aerospace, Marine, Civil and Engineering community delivered 60 minute workshops and seminars to promote their own community to make the students aware of the fantastic career opportunities that are available within these industries.

Due to the huge success of the Industry Enterprise Day, Discovery4 is now organising a similar enterprise day that is geared around the environment and being green. They are hoping to promote to the young people at Kennet School on how scientists and engineers are working together to limit or reverse the impact of human existence in an environmental and economically viable way by designing and implementing greener technology and building environmentally friendly infrastructures.

For the students to fully gain from the enterprise day they would really appreciate any volunteers that could attend and deliver a workshop or seminar that highlight the types of environmental projects they have designed or implemented and why STEM subjects are important in solving future environmental challenges.

The Industry Enterprise Day is scheduled to take place on Friday 25th June 2010 at Kennet Secondary School that is located at Stoney Lane, Thatcham, West Berkshire RG19. They would be very happy to reimburse any travel and accommodation expenses. We are expecting around 300 year 9 students to attend the enterprise day. If you can help or require any further information, please contact Angella Kelly

WES member receives national award.

WES member and University of Salford lecturer has won an award at The Muslim News Awards for Excellence - Britain's longest standing Muslim awards event.
Dr Haifa Takruri-Rizk MBE beat stiff competition to win the Fazlur Rahman Khan Award for Excellence in Engineering, Science or Technology at yesterday's event in London's Grosvenor House.
The Ministry of Defence sponsored award is the latest recognition of the 18 years Dr Takruri-Rizk has spent at the University of Salford researching and promoting science, engineering and technology to women and black and minority ethnic (BME) people.
Dr Takruri-Rizk has led various national and regional projects researching the lack of progress made by women and BME people to address the issues preventing them from succeeding in science, engineering and technology.
During her career she has pioneered a highly successful national initiative to encourage thousands of girls to study and choose science and engineering as a career.
The award is not the first time Dr Takruri-Rizk's contribution has been recognised - last year she was awarded an MBE for her work inspiring women and BME people to take careers in science and engineering.
Dr Takruri-Rizk said: ""As a BME female engineer it's a great honour to receive this award in recognition of my contribution to British society.

"I don't do what I do to receive awards but to be recognised in this way makes the hard work worthwhile!"
Equality Bill now passed

The 2010 Equality Bill has now been passed. The bill contains a series of measures for tacking inequalities which will help Britain become a fairer society. For more onfo on the Act click here
Jocelyn Bell Burnell - Featured on Beautiful Minds

In a BBC4 television programme Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell describes how she discovered pulsars, the by-products of supernova explosions which make all life in the universe possible. She describes the moments of despair and jubilation as the discovery unfolded and her excitement as pulsars took the scientific world by storm.
Profoundly reflective about the nature of scientific discovery, she shares her thoughts on the connections between religion and science and describes how she see science as a search for understanding rather than a quest for truth
