Young Woman Engineer of the Year Award Update

WES member Mamta Singhal explains what she has been doing since winning the WES Young Woman Engineer of the Year Award in 2008

I had heard former winners of the WES prize say that the prize changed their life but little did I know how big an impact on a global scale it would make. Since winning the prize in January 2008, I have travelled from Dundee to London to give talks and presentations, going to dinners and being the guest of honour at some high profile engineering and business events. In November 2008 I was also awarded a highly acclaimed prize at the Association of MBA's International Student of the Year 2008. In December 2008 I was personally congratulated by HRH Princess Anne for my contribution to Engineering at the WISE Award. I truly believe none of this would have happened had it not been for winning the WES prize and the related PR coverage. I have now finished my MBA and am hoping to graduate with a distinction plus I have secured a really exciting Project Managers job at MARS Chocolate. To have all these amazing things happen to me before the age of 29 is such a boast to ones confidence and career. So a massive thanks to WES and the IET in making it all happen ...The Sky is the Limit!

WES Essex Cluster runs successful CV Masterclass

A joint event for Women Engineering Society Members and BCS Women was run on both Thursday 09 and Saturday 11 April 2009 at Petite Patisserie, Westcliff on Sea.   It was a CV Masterclass designed to suit those searching for a new position, climbing the career ladder, returning to work after redundancy or a career break or looking for a new direction.  The timing was particularly apt in view of the current jumpy job market.

The event was organised by WES treasurer Betty McCarthy and led by Vanissa Amliwala, Director of Career-SOS Limited www.career-sos.com  Special thanks are due to Vanissa Amliwala for not only devising the content and delivery but for also donating one of the two days to assist with 90th celebrations of WES.

Running the CV Masterclass on both a weekday and a weekend addressed the needs of both those in work and those taking a career break or in-between jobs.

What was covered...
What makes a good CV?
How should it be presented?  Getting the format right - different styles and types of CV
The nitty gritty of producing a powerful CV.  What should I include?  What can be left out? What order should it go in? How long should it be?
How to sell your skills and experience without going OTT
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
CV top tips

All attendees received an informative CV Masterclass pack containing in-depth practical guidance on how to create a powerful CV with real impact.

What does a Woman Engineer look like?

As Picture Editor on the IET publications, when it comes to sourcing images of female Engineers, it is no easy task. In fact, finding imagery of Engineers generally can be challenging, unless you want stereotypical boiler-suited, hard-hat-wearing, men branding hammers and spanners!

So when it comes to finding realistic images of women Engineers, it's almost impossible, unless a photographer is commissioned with this brief.  To give the picture agencies their due credit, what is a true visual representation of a "Woman Engineer"? - surely if the model in question isn't wearing a hard hat and brandishing a large tool, she is actually just a female model.  If the lady in question is wearing a suit then is she not just a generic businesswoman? - as much as us picture editors strive to find realistic, genuine and honest images of women, this is no easy task, especially with so few female Engineers in the public eye to act as inspiration.  So what does a "Woman Engineer" really look like?...answers on a postcard please....
We will feature some in next months newsletter
