CRAYONS TO CALCULATORS:
22% GROWTH - AND KIDS ARE STILL LEFT SHORT
New backpacks of all designs and colors annually signal the start of school. They also represent the thousands of children who otherwise would not be able to start school without supplies. Since its launch in 2005, Crayons to Calculators has grown dramatically. Unfortunately, so has the demand! It has been challenging enough to come to grips with the depths of poverty that exist in our community. Rampant job losses and home foreclosures add a new dimension to the growing need.

FROM "FRINGE IDIOT" TO PRIME TIME |
|

Ann Cooper and BVSD are getting national attention for transforming school lunch in Boulder Valley School District. It started with the basics. In August, food service employees used to opening cans and jars and serving processed food were given five days of training to help transition them to serving locally grown, freshly prepared foods. Then, new "restaurants" featuring salad bars were opened in 45 BVSD schools. Parents who shunned previous standard cafeteria fare of bouncing hot dogs and "plastic" processed cheese are enthusiastic about the delicious, healthy food. And, based upon growing lunch volumes, so are the kids! Two things are necessary to sustain the momentum.

FORREST E. COOK'S RETIREMENT IS THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING |
|
When Forrest E. Cook retired from Hutchinson Black & Cook, LLC, last summer, the firm honored him by establishing an endowment fund with Impact on Education. Mr. Cook served on the BVSD School Board and was a strong supporter of public education. And, for as long as we have records, HBC has annually sponsored a Classroom Mini-Grant that awards funds to teachers to implement creative classroom projects that enhance the curriculum and provide hands-on learning opportunities for students. HBC and friends of Mr. Cook have donated more than half of the $15,000 needed to endow a Classroom Mini-Grant to fund a classroom project in Cook's name in perpetuity. |

WANT TO CREATE THE MEMORY OF A LIFETIME? |
|
We are accepting nominations until November 2 for our annual Impact Awards, established 18 years ago to recognize educational excellence in Boulder Valley. Each year, five individuals who make extraordinary contributions to public education are celebrated and honored at the Impact Awards dinner. This is an inspiring and wonderful evening that is a highlight of our year and each recipient's career. Anyone can nominate a fantastic educator, administrator or volunteer.
