SEC-JC Pep Rally is one week away!
The Jefferson City Convention & Visitors Bureau's SEC-JC Pep Rally is one week from today and you will not want to miss this rousing event! On Friday, September 7th from 5-9pm historic downtown Jefferson City will roll out the red carpet in celebration of the Mizzou SEC home opener against the Georgia Bulldogs. A Temporary Open Container (TOC) District, like that used at Thursday Night Live, will be in effect so visitors can show ID, purchase an over 21 wristband and event cup at the central carding station and visit participating downtown bars.
The actual pep rally will take place on the main stage at the corner of Madison and High Street at 6pm. Do not miss this electric show which will include speakers from the MIZZOU Athletics program and former NFL super bowl winner, Michael Jones. Lincoln University's band, the Marching Musical Storm, will make an appearance along with cheerleaders from Capitol Cheer and entertainment from the Capital City Boys and Girls Club High Steppers. Street Festival entertainment will line the sidewalks of High Street throughout the evening and visitors can also catch a United FMX Extreme Motorcycle Stunt Show at 5:30 and 6:45 pm.
Transportation sponsored by the Jefferson City CVB Athletic Events Committee, will be providing free transportation from the Truman Parking lot and various hotels throughout the community from 4:30-9:30pm.
For more information on the SEC-JC Pep Rally, please contact the Jefferson City Convention & Visitor Bureau office at (573)632-2820 or go to www.VisitJeffersonCity.com/secjcpeprally. |
Inside the Walls Festival
Live Music Lineup
The Inside the Walls Festival will be held at the Missouri State Penitentiary from Friday, 9/14- Sunday, 9/16. Events include a free movie showing of "The Last Castle," family-friendly kid's activites and sporting events in the prison's upper yard and a classic car show. The festival promises something for everyone, but in particular, if you are a fan of live music - this event promises something for YOU!
A Beer & Wine Garden will be located in the cul-de-sac of Lafayette Street, which runs in front of the entrace to the Missouri State Penitentiary. Entrance to the Beer & Wine Garden is only $1 (per day). Once inside, you can spend hours listening to live music from some of mid-Missouri's favorite bands. Be sure to bring a lawn chair or two and plan to stay for the duration of the show. Locally owned restaurants Prison Brews, Bandanas BBQ and O'Donoghue's will be on-hand doling out some tasty treats - so there is no need to leave for food.
Friday's Beer & Wine Garden, sponsored by Prison Brews, starts at 7pm and ends at 10pm. Macon, Missouri's very own Keota kicks off the festival and will play everything from folk to country to blues and a few original compositions as well. At 8:30, The Hipnecks will take the stage. The Hipnecks are one of Columbia's most popular bands and take a true genre-bending approach to making music that is firmly rooted in America's heartland.
Saturday's Beer & Wine Garden, sponsored by the Jefferson City Convention & Visitors Bureau, starts at 2pm and ends at 7pm. First to take the stage will be Down Side Up, a trio of young Jefferson City musicians inspired by an eclectic mix of alternative, blues and classic rock artists. West of New York plays at 3:00pm and is a duo that plays original music and covers from many eras. Jefferson City local favorites Dirt Leg Benders and 2 Car Pile-Up play at 4:15 and 5:45 respectively, and are sure to bring some high-energy entertainment to the prison. And in case you haven't had enough of the prison when the music is over, Ghost Tours will be offered at 8pm and 9pm ($25).

Steve Picker Resigns from CVB
Steve Picker has resigned from the position of Executive Director of the Jefferson City Convention & Visitors Bureau to follow a new career path in Florda effective September 17. Picker has been with the Bureau for more than nine years, as Director for six.
During Picker's tenure he was instrumental in many changes and improvements at the Bureau including establishing tours of the Missouri State Penitentiary and creating the Discover Jefferson City Foundation, a non-profit arm of the CVB, to develop fundraising strategies to promote tourism in the Jefferson City community.
"I am proud of the accomplishments the Bureau has achieved over the last six years, none of which could have occurred without the help of so many people including a great staff, community leaders, an extremely supportive board and directors and countless volunteers. I feel the Bureau has achieved incredible results due to teamwork and support from the entire community," said Picker. "Jefferson City is my hometown; I love the community and plan to return here."
We will miss you, Steve!!! |

The Big Reveal: New CVB Headshots
Per our promise last month, we are revealing one staff member's headshot at a time and this month we are excited to show you our prison tour coordinator, Sheila Sanford, "doin' time" at her favorite spot, the Missouri State Penitentiary.
A-hall is the most historic housing unit at MSP and makes for an incredible backdrop. Professional photographers from all over the country have traveled to Jefferson City to photographic the impressive structure and we think Anthony Jinson really did the place justice.
