C-SPAN Spotlights Jefferson City

The Jefferson City Convention & Visitors Bureua recently announced that Jefferson City is one of six American cities chosen by C-SPAN to be featured in nationally-televised programs that will showcase the city's history and literary life. C-SPAN will send a team of video-journalists to Jefferson City June 4-8 to conduct interviews, tours and video-shooting that will culminate in a series of programs to be broadcast three weeks later during a dedicated "Jefferson City weekend."

C-SPAN's initiative is called the "2012 LCV Cities Tour," in reference to its use of "Local Content Vehicles" (LCVs) and mobile video journalists who are dispatched to capture the history and literary life of unique American cities. C-SPAN is kicking off its week-long visit to Jefferson City on Monday, June 4th with a private Meet & Greet at G2 Gallery. Hosted by the Jefferson City Convention & Visitors Bureau, the event will include presentations from city officials and the unveiling of the series of local landmarks and tours that will be included during the content-gathering week.

The special features on Jefferson City are scheduled to air on C-SPAN2's BookTV on Saturday, June 30th at 11am CT and C-SPAN3's American HistoryTV on Sunday, July 1st at 4pm CT. For more information about the LCV Cities Tour stop in Jefferson City, please contact Chris Wilson or Ryan Winkler at (573)632-2820.

MHC logoMissouri State Penitentiary Museum awarded grant

We are proud to announce the Missouri State Penitentiary museum was awarded a grant from the Missouri Humanities Council with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The $2,500 grant will be used for the development of museum display context, imagery and assessment of historical accuracy. The Missouri Humanities Council (MHC) aims to increase Missourians' exposure to the humanities and awards its grants to support locally-generated programs and projects based in subjects such as history and anthropology.

The Jefferson City CVB recently announced plans to develop a Missouri State Penitentiary museum to open in the spring of 2013. The museum will be located at 100 E. High St in the vacant space on the second floor. Cindee Herrick was selected to design a concept for the museum, and with her and others' efforts, the plans for the museum are progressing smoothly.

"We are incredibly appreciative that the Missouri Humanities Council selected the Missouri State Penitentiary museum to receive this grant," said Steve Picker, Jefferson City Convention & Visitors Bureau executive director. "The fact that they chose us legitimizes the work we are doing and is a strong indication that we are on the right track with this project."

 Barge Tour 2012
Thank You 2012 Barge Tour Participants!

The 2012 "Barge into History" was a huge hit! The Discover Jefferson City Foundation successfully sold out two nights this year, and much fun was had by all. We repeatedly heard how unique the event was and how much the attendees loved the views of Jefferson City enjoyed from the Missouri River.

Special thanks go out to all of the sponsors, participants and volunteers - the event would not have been possible without your hard work and dedication! Because of all of you, the Discover Jefferson City Foundation will be better equipped to accomplish our mission in the coming year.

The Jefferson City Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Discover Jefferson City Foundation are already looking forward to the 2013 Barge Tour - we hope you will be a part of this special event next year!
