History Comes Alive in Jefferson City
In celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War, history will come alive at Jefferson City's Sesquicentennial Re-Enactment this weekend. 700 re-enactors will converge on Binder Lake Park to simulate Civil War battles which will feature 20 field pieces, cavalry and period settlers. As many know, Missouri was a divided state during the Civil War and many brothers fought brothers and friends fought friends ending in tragic battles and heavy casualties.
This weekend's re-enactment and surrounding events will give Jefferson City residents and visitors a chance to learn more about the incredible history of our city. The family-friendly events are free and open to the public. Concession stands will be set up throughout Binder Park and re-enactors will demonstrate a variety of activities true to the era, such as making apple butter and shoeing horses.
Camps are open to the public on Saturday from 9:00am - 9:30pm and Sunday from 9:00am - 3:00pm. Highlights include Civil War Battles scheduled for 12:30pm on both Saturday & Sunday, a period ball with dance caller at 7:30pm on Saturday, and a period church service at 10:00am Sunday. There are also a number of period music performances scheduled as well as presentations from local historians.
A full schedule of events is available from the Jefferson City News Tribune. Go here to learn more. |
2012 MSHSAA State Track & Field Championships
The Missouri State Track & Field Championships have taken place in Jefferson City for more than 30 years, and at the end of 2011, the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) approved Jefferson City & Lincoln University's proposal to keep hosting the event through 2018. Each year the event brings thousands of participants and attendees to our community, generating an economic impact of $378,000 and utilizing nearly 3,000 room nights at local hotels. Jefferson City restaurants and retail stores also enjoy a positive fluctuation in business throughout these weekends.
This year's events will be held on May 18 & 19 and May 25 & 26 at Lincoln University's Dwight T. Reed Stadium. Many local organizations play a big role in providing support for the championship events. Volunteers donate time, local businesses provide services and sponsorships, and all of our citizens do their part to make visitors feel welcome in our community.
"The State Track and Field Championships are a highly anticipated tradition in our community," said Chris Wilson, sports sales manager at the Convention & Visitors Bureau. "This event has such a positive impact on our city and we look forward to hosting the athletes and families through 2018." |

Have you visited the Corps of Discovery lately?
In 2008, the Corps of Discovery: Lewis & Clark Monument was unveiled at the Katy Trailhead Plaza on the Missouri State Capitol grounds. Designed to depict a specific day in Lewis & Clark's epic journey on June 4th, 1804, the Corps of Discovery is a sight to behold at any time, day or night. Visitors can stand side by side with Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Many have patted Lewis' Newfoundland, Seaman, on the head as is evident by the spots where the patina shows wear from the many enthusiastic visitors who have done just that. Starting in mid-May, docents are available to give historical presentations at the monument on Saturdays from 10:00am - 4:00pm, Sundays from 2:00pm - 4:00pm and holiday Mondays from 10:00am - 4:00pm. Hosting a group or looking for something interesting to do on your next outing? Special appointments can be scheduled by calling Amy at (573) 634-6482 or emailing ashaw@jeffcitymo.org. |
