Volume 8, Issue 3                                                                                                        March 2012

Greetings!

Seems as if we've leapt straight from Fall to Spring and there are no complaints here at the CVB office! The sooner we can enjoy strolls through downtown and fresh blooming flowers at the Missouri State Capitol the better.

Wishing you a Merry March,
Ryan Winkler

Barge into History with the Discover Jefferson City Foundation

2011 Barge TourThe Discover Jefferson City Foundation is pleased to announce its second annual "Barge into History" fundraiser to promote tourism in the Jefferson City community.

After completely selling out the 2011 event in an incredibly short time, the Discover Jefferson City Foundation is offering two evenings for this year's 2012 "Barge into History" tour. The events will include a relaxing barge tour on the Missouri River which will offer unique views of the Missouri State Capitol and other downtown Jefferson City landmarks.

The mission of the Discover Jefferson City Foundation is to directly support, through financial or in-kind donations, the Jefferson City Convention & Visitors Bureau by providing education and information about the diverse cultural, historic, educational, scientific, civic, and athletic attractions and events available in Jefferson City, Missouri. The money raised from the barge tour will go toward promoting the Missouri State Penitentiary museum and tours among other top-priority activities established.

"Barge into History" will be held on Thursday, May 10th and Friday, May 11th. Boarding begins at 5:30 p.m. at Noren Access with departure scheduled for 6:00 p.m.; the barge will return at 8:00 p.m. Heavy hors d'oeuvres, dessert, beer, wine and soda will be served. Tickets are $100 per person and space is limited.

Jefferson City Convention & Visitors Bureau
makes plans for prison museum

The Jefferson City Convention & Visitors Bureau is excited to announce plans for construction of a Missouri State Penitentiary (MSP) museum to open in the Spring of 2013.

After reviewing multiple proposals, the Convention & Visitors Bureau selected Lucinda "Cindee" J. Herrick to design a concept for the museum. Among Herrick's museum experience is work as a Project Manager for the Missouri Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture and as a Special Project Curator for the Missouri Masonic Library & Museum. She also has extensive teaching experience at multiple universities and spent 10 years running the U.S. Coast Guard Museum.

The Missouri State Penitentiary museum will be located in a vacant space on the second floor of the Jefferson City Convention & Visitors Bureau offices at 100 E. High St. The museum will be accessible from an elevator in the back of the building.

After finalizing the prison museum concept, the Convention & Visitors Bureau will begin searching for a few specific artifacts related to the selected themes. If you believe you have one-of-a-kind MSP artifacts and would like to submit your name to be contacted at that time, please call (573) 632-2820. If you would like to make a financial contribution to the museum, the Discover Jefferson City Foundation is accepting tax deductible donations. Contact Sheila@VisitJeffersonCity.com.

KRCG Capitol photos

New feature added to CVB website

The Jefferson City Convention & Visitors Bureau has partnered with KRCG-13 to bring you a live look at the Missouri State Capitol which can be seen on the CVB website, www.VisitJeffersonCity.com.

The still frame, captured from the roof of the building next door to the CVB offices at 100 E. High St., updates every five minutes and shows the view of the Capitol looking northwest towards the Missouri River Bridge. So far, the live shots have captured a variety of settings; everything from sunrises to sunsets, to storms rolling in, to the twinkling lights of the Capitol at night.

Add www.VisitJeffersonCity.com as your home page and watch the many changing views of the beautiful Missouri State Capitol.

Tradeshow Travel

 Marianne - Working Women Tradeshow

The Jefferson City Convention & Visitors Bureau frequently participates in local, regional and national industry tradeshows. The purpose of tradeshows is to spread the word to different groups about all of the incredible attractions Jefferson City has to offer. One can often find CVB Sales Manager, Marianne Thies, dressed up in her best prison stripes sharing stories about the Missouri State Penitentiary, Jefferson City Historical Society and other area attractions. In February, Marianne attended four different tradeshows: Bank Travel, Metro Lawn & Garden, the Working Women's Survival Show and the MO Parks & Recreation Association. Marriane's glowing personality at these tradeshows is instrumental in booking a number of large bus tour groups to come and visit Jefferson City!
