JEFFERSON CITY CONVENTION & VISITORS BUREAU

MAKES PLANS FOR PRISON  MUSEUM

Missouri State Penitentiary exhibition will be hosted at 100 E. High

JEFFERSON CITY, MO. February 28th, 2012 - The Jefferson City Convention & Visitors Bureau is excited to announce plans for construction of a Missouri State Penitentiary (MSP) museum to open in the Spring of 2013.

After reviewing multiple proposals, the Convention & Visitors Bureau selected Lucinda "Cindee" J. Herrick to design a concept for the museum. Among Herrick's museum experience is work as a Project Manager for the Missouri Farm Bureau Foundation for Agriculture and as a Special Project Curator for the Missouri Masonic Library & Museum. She also has extensive teaching experience at multiple universities and spent 10 years running the U.S. Coast Guard Museum.

"We believe Cindee has done an incredible job absorbing everything we've shared with her about the history of the Missouri State Penitentiary and working to translate the information into a conceptual design for the prison museum," said Steve Picker, Executive Director of the Convention & Visitors Bureau. "Although we are still in the early planning stages, we feel the addition of the museum will greatly enhance the experience of those interested in learning more about the history of MSP and will encourage more overnight stays."

The Missouri State Penitentiary museum will be located in a vacant space on the second floor of the Jefferson City Convention & Visitors Bureau offices at 100 E. High St. The museum will be accessible from an elevator in the back of the building.

"The space at 100 E. High St. is extremely conducive to a museum of this nature," Herrick said. "The open floor plan allows for a variety of display cases in which we can showcase a multitude of  unique MSP artifacts."

After finalizing the prison museum concept, the Convention & Visitors Bureau will begin searching for a few specific artifacts related to the  selected themes. If you believe you have one-of-a-kind MSP artifacts and would like to submit your name to be contacted at that time, please call (573) 632-2820. If you would like to make a financial contribution to the museum, the Discover Jefferson City Foundation is accepting tax deductible donations. Contact  Sheila@VisitJeffersonCity.com.
