Hit television show, Ghost Hunters, to feature Missouri State Penitentiary on November 2

It's time to find out what kinds of unusual things really take place within the walls of the Missouri State Penitentiary.

The Missouri State Penitentiary will be featured on Ghost Hunters on Wednesday, November 2. The 2011 season premiered on August 24, and the Bureau found out today that MSP will make its Ghost Hunters' debut in November.

The Bureau is in the process of planning an event in conjunction with the airing of the MSP episode; the public will be invited. More details will be forthcoming.

Ghost Hunters came to Jefferson City in June to investigate the historic Missouri State Penitentiary site.  The cast and crew spent about a week filming and exploring the facility. Their findings will be revealed in the upcoming episode.

Premiering in 2004, Ghost Hunters is an American paranormal reality television series that shows once a week on Syfy.  Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson, leaders of The Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS), worked during the day as plumbers and at night investigated sites.  As the popularity of the show has grown, so has the scope of work for Hawes and Wilson, who now focus predominantly on their ghost hunting profession. Their goal is to track down paranormals in sites across the country.

Take a closer look at Jefferson City's history

Impress your friends with your knowledge of Jefferson City history trivia.  All you have to do is read the Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau's Historic Tours brochure (click the image at right). You'll be able to answer questions like:

  • How many stabbings and violent crimes occurred at the Missouri State Penitentiary in 1963-64, resulting in MSP being called the "bloodiest 47 acres in America" by a national publication?
  • What year was the first bridge built over the Missouri River in Jefferson City?
  • What was the building at 416-420 East State Street used for in the 1870s?
  • Which of Missouri's first ladies spent countless hours working in the dirt to restore the beautiful grounds now known as the Carnahan Memorial Garden?

Printed copies of the Historic Tours Brochure are available at the Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Missouri State Penitentiary "Shanks to Shakers" coffee table book available

From historic pictures of the 1954 Riot to knives hidden in lipstick tubes; this book has it all.  Shanks to Shakers: Reflections of the Missouri State Penitentiary coffee table books are now available for purchase.

TShanks to Shakers coverhe Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau partnered with Mark Schreiber to develop a unique volume documenting rare, historical, collectible artifacts of MSP. Shanks to Shakers is a pictorial record of hundreds of items associated with life behind the walls. Although it would be impossible to compile an all-inclusive volume, Shanks to Shakers, for the first time, provides a guide for those interested in the history of MSP artifacts. The volume is a hardback coffee table style publication in full color. Old photographs, books, postcards, prison-made weapons, paintings, wood carvings and even salt and pepper shakers once sold in the prison gift shop are among the many items documented. Shanks to Shakers will no doubt become a rare collectible.

For 42 years Mark S. Schreiber was intimately involved in the history of the MSP. During his 42 year criminal justice career he collected the stories and artifacts of the prison. Schreiber served as the last deputy warden of operations at the old MSP, retiring April 1, 2010.
