MISSOURI STATE PENITENTIARY "SHANKS TO SHAKERS" COFFEE TABLE BOOK NOW AVAILABLE
For immediate release: July 15, 2011
From historic pictures of the 1954 Riot to knives hidden in lipstick tubes; this book has it all. Shanks to Shakers: Reflections of the Missouri State Penitentiary coffee table books are now available for purchase.
The Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau partnered with Mark Schreiber to develop a unique volume documenting rare, historical, collectible artifacts of MSP. Shanks to Shakers is a pictorial record of hundreds of items associated with life behind the walls. Although it would be impossible to compile an all-inclusive volume, Shanks to Shakers will, for the first time, provide a guide for those interested in the history of MSP artifacts. The volume is a hardback coffee table style publication in full color. Old photographs, books, postcards, prison-made weapons, paintings, wood carvings and even salt and pepper shakers once sold in the prison gift shop are among the many items documented. Shanks to Shakers will no doubt become a rare collectible.
For 42 years Mark S. Schreiber was intimately involved in the history of the MSP. During his 42 year criminal justice career he collected the stories and artifacts of the prison. Schreiber served as the last deputy warden of operations at the old MSP, retiring April 1, 2010.
