Missouri River Pedestrian/ Bike Bridge opens
The Missouri River Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge is nearly complete and soon walkers and riders will be able to cross the river with more than just a couple of feet of roadway between them and vehicular traffic. A ribbon cutting, hosted by MODOT, for the bridge is scheduled for Friday, April 8 at 10:30 a.m. A second ribbon cutting with the Jefferson City Area Chamber of Commerce will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 9. Saturday's event will celebrate the new bridge and Jefferson City Outdoors.
The Missouri River Pedestrian/ Bike Bridge has been attached to the side of the northbound Hwy. 54 Missouri River Bridge. With this new attachment, pedestrians and bicyclists will be able to easily and safely cross the Missouri River Bridge to travel back and forth between north Jefferson City and the heart of the city. Katy Trail users will be able to navigate through North Jefferson City and Noren Access to then travel up the ramp to the bridge. And for those who are in Jefferson City and want to head toward the Katy Trail, the entrance to the bridge will be at the intersection of West Main and Clay streets.
The new bridge attachment is eight feet wide and includes two lookout points with a spectacular view of the Missouri State Capitol and the Jefferson City riverfront; it will be fully ADA accessible.
The total cost of the Missouri River Pedestrian Bridge was $6.7 million, $5.6 million came from federal Bicycle/Pedestrian Enhancements program. The remaining $1.6 million was funded jointly by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, City of Jefferson and the Missouri State Parks Foundation. A partnership between these entities and the Missouri Department of Transportation allowed this project to become a reality. |
Missouri State Penitentiary tour season officially kicked off on March 1 and are going strong again this year. So far this year, over 3,000 have gone on the tour. Shown at left is a portion of the group who attended the ribbon cutting and reception at the MSP on March 1.
Ghost tours are now available every Saturday at 8 p.m. The first few ghost tours have been very popular and those who have experienced the 'unusual' side of MSP have really enjoyed it. Go to www.MissouriPenTours.com to book your tour.
The Bureau is now offering a prison group tour for students for only $5 per student or chaperone. This is a special 1-hour abbreviated Prison Tour with appropriate stories and history for students. It is NOT our regular 2-hour more in depth $12 tour. No "questions and answers" during this 1-hour tour because there will not be time. Some of the stories include why the youngest person behind bars was a baby girl, food inmates eat and a typical day for an inmate. Convention and Visitors Bureau resumes Saturday hours
The Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau resumed its Saturday hours in March. The Bureau will be open every Saturday until the end of October, excluding Easter Saturday (April 23).
Over the past three years, the Bureau has offered extended business hours every Saturday from April through October. The Bureau found that the staff was able to help a large number of visitors who were downtown for different events, prison tours or visiting Jefferson City during the weekend. As the weather gets warmer, many events will take place in Jefferson City on the weekends and the Convention and Visitors Bureau strives to be accessible to those who may need information about the city.
"These extra hours are designed to cater specifically to our visitors who will be in Jefferson City for tours and events going on throughout the city," said Steve Picker, Convention and Visitors Bureau executive director. "By opening for a few hours on Saturdays, we extend our outreach to those visiting our community."
The office will typically be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., but hours may be adjusted to coincide with other scheduled events in the downtown area. For more information, contact the Bureau at (573) 632-2820. |
