Missouri State Penitentiary tours are back, kickoff event scheduled on March 1
In 2004, the Missouri State Penitentiary (MSP) was decommissioned; and in May of 2009, the Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau began offering tours of the historic site to the public. In the past two years more than 15,000 people have seen what life was like "inside the walls."
"We are really looking forward to starting the 2011 tour season," said Steve Picker, executive director of the Bureau. "The past two years have been very successful. We've seen incredible growth from 2009 to 2010 and we expect that growth to continue in 2011."
To kick off this year's tours, the Bureau will host an event on Tuesday, March 1. A special tour for members of the media will start at 8:30 a.m. followed by a ribbon cutting at 11 a.m. in front of A Hall/Housing Unit 4.
The public event will begin with a short welcome ceremony and will conclude with a reception and tours of A Hall. Souvenirs and tickets will be sold during the event and anyone who purchases a tour ticket on March 1 will receive a complimentary miniature billy club souvenir.
This year the Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau will not only offer a two hour historic tour and a four hour in-depth tour of the MSP, but also will offer twilight tours, specialty history tours, photography tours, ghost hunt tours, ghost tours and paranormal investigations. An overview of these tours will be given during the kickoff event. |
Jefferson City Outdoors opens doors for new sporting events
In the spring of 2010, the Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau Athletic Events Committee (AEC) hosted a retreat to address various issues regarding sporting events in Jefferson City. Out of that meeting came many good ideas, one of which recently came to fruition. The idea was for the CVB and AEC to form a planning group for sporting events. In December, a group of event planners met and formed "Jefferson City Outdoors." During the group's discussion they decided that the focus should be on outdoor and adventure sports and therefore chose a fitting name.
Whereas the Athletic Events Committee is a group of volunteers that support events, Jefferson City Outdoors will be a group that actually plans and manages events.
Jefferson City Outdoors' mission is as follows: "To provide outdoor recreational and competitive opportunities to encourage active lifestyles, community development, economic impact and the enjoyment of our unique natural resources by our residents and visitors."
The Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau is now in the process of creating a web site that will act as a one stop shop for people interested in outdoor and adventure sports. The site, www.JeffersonCityOutdoors.com, will be used as a tool for planning and promoting events. It will include a calendar, general information, registration forms and photos. Along with newly created events, Jefferson City Outdoors will assist with events such as Race to the Dome, Jefferson City Adventure Race and Capital Cat Classic.
Besides helping pre-existing events grow, Jefferson City Outdoors will be an entity that will help increase the number of sporting events in our city. Ultimately, the CVB hopes to increase economic impact through additional visitors to our community.

Discover Jefferson City offers opportunity to connect with Missouri River
California has the Pacific Ocean, Colorado has the Rocky Mountains and Jefferson City has the Missouri River.
Discover Jefferson City Foundation is offering a unique opportunity for people to spend an evening rediscovering the charm and beauty of Jefferson City's 'big nature', the Missouri River. The first ever "Discover the River" barge tour will be Thursday, May 12. Boarding begins at 5:30 p.m. with departure scheduled for 6 p.m.; the barge will return at 8:30 p.m.
Enjoy a relaxing ride on the Missouri River while Gary Kremer from the Missouri Historical Society recounts Jefferson City's fascinating connection to the river and live music entertains. Heavy hors'd'oevres, beer, wine and soda will be served. Tickets are $100 per person and seating is limited to 150.
The mission of the Discover Jefferson City Foundation is to directly support, through financial or in-kind donations, the Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau by providing education and information about the diverse cultural, historic, educational, scientific, civic, and athletic attractions and events available in Jefferson City, Missouri. Discover Jefferson City has developed this fundraiser to promote tourism in the Jefferson City community.
"The money raised from the "Discover the River" barge tour will go toward a variety of tourism-related improvements to Jefferson City," said Amy Freeman, event chair. "The foundation has established several top-priority activities including promoting the Missouri State Penitentiary tours, bolstering Jefferson City's way-finding signage and implementing a city trolley."
Contact Megan Wadley (megan@visitjeffersoncity.com or (573) 632-2820) at the Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau to purchase tickets or to inquire about the tour. |
