Take a walk and explore downtown Jefferson City

The Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau created a walking tour that showcases the architectural significance of downtown Jefferson City via audio and visual components.

The downtown architecture audio and video walking tour is available on mp3 players at the Bureau and can also be played online at www.VisitJeffersonCity.com/media.  As the tour guide speaks to you through your headphones about what you are seeing, a series of photos appears on the screen of the mp3 player, helping you identify specific attributes of the buildings.

Normally, people look at the building from street level and never look up at the amazing architectural details above them; this walking tour is an eye-opening experience.

Stop by the Convention and Visitors Bureau, 100 E. High Street, to pick up an mp3 player to use during your tour.  There is no charge, the Bureau just needs a copy of your credit card or driver's license as collateral.  The tour takes about 45 minutes and spans about a half a mile of downtown Jefferson City.

The production of this audio and video walking tour was made possible through a joint effort with the City of Jefferson, the Missouri State Historic Preservation Office and the Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau. Jefferson City historians Ralph C. Bray and Booker Rucker helped create the script for this project.

2010 Visitor's Guide receives facelift

The Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau Visitor's Guide is undergoing a transformation.  The newest version of the guide, set to come out the second week of August, will look a little different than it has in the past.

TOM CapitolThe Bureau has partnered with the News Tribune to create and print a Visitors Guide that will be produced quarterly, instead of annually.  This quarterly guide will allow the Bureau to update content on a regular basis, therefore providing the most current information about Jefferson City.  Four issues will be produced: fall, winter, spring and summer; each issue will include specific events taking place during its respective season.

The guide will be included in every hotel room in Jefferson City so that visitors have an opportunity to explore and experience everything that our community has to offer.

Another change to the Visitor's Guide is the size of the brochure.  The new version will be nearly twice as large and will include listings for antiques, shopping, restaurants, wineries and breweries and nightlife.  The Bureau has not sold advertising in the Visitor's Guide in the past, but the partnership with the News Tribune enabled the selling of advertising.

For more information about the new and improved Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau Visitor's Guide, contact Sarah Stroesser at (573) 632-2820.  To request your free copy, call Jennifer Nelp at (573) 632-2820 or e-mail Jennifer@VisitJeffersonCity.com.

CVB hires prison tour coordinator

Megan Wadley recently joined the staff of the Convention and Visitors Bureau as the Prison Tour Coordinator.  Wadley was born and raised in Holts Summit and is a graduate of Jefferson City High School.  She attended the University of Tulsa with study abroad at the Diorama Arts Centre in London. Wadley has worked for several non-profit organizations in the field of resource development and public relations including VSA Arts of Missouri, The American Cancer Society and Reef Check UCLA.

meganWadley will handle all aspects of the Missouri State Penitentiary tours including scheduling tours, working with tour guides and promoting the MSP tours through various means including social media.

Wadley said that she is excited to learn the countless stories that make up the history of the Missouri State Penitentiary and share them with the rest of the community.

"I remember growing up and looking up at the walls with wonder as to what could be taking place inside," Wadley said.  "It is impossible to not get excited when the tour guides enlighten their guests to the truth in MSP. I think it's something everyone should have the chance to see."

Wadley said she has enjoyed learning about the different businesses and attractions in town as well as the people who share the same passion for this city as she does.

Wadley said the best part of MSP, as a tourist attraction, is that there truly is something for everyone.

"Its history is a unique and major part of the culture of this city;" Wadley said, "After hearing stories of riots and violence in contrast with stories of humanities and kindness, it is impossible to forget the impact MSP has had and will have in the future."

Wadley also participates in local community theatre and works with the Jefferson City High School Color Guard.  She can be contacted at Megan@VisitJeffersonCity.com.
