State Track and Field Championships
Don't let a thirty minute wait at the Italian restaurant upset you; those crowds are injecting money into the Jefferson City economy.
The Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) will welcome high school athletes from across the state for the Missouri State High School Track and Field Championships.
Lincoln University's Dwight T. Reed Stadium will host this two weekend event. Classes one and two will compete on May 21 and 22; three and four will compete on May 28 and 29.
The State Track and Field Championship has taken place in Jefferson City for the past 30 years and brings in thousands of high school students to town. This event has a tremendous economic impact on Jefferson City and, in 2009, brought in an estimated $375,000. A conservative estimate of the tax revenue earned from the State Track and Field Championships totals an impressive $29,000. The event draws approximately 15,000 people and utilizes about 2,800 room nights. Hotels, restaurants and retail stores reap the benefits of the many youth athletes and their supporters throughout these weekends.
"This is one of several citywide events that has an incredible impact on our city," said Daniel Helton, sports sales manager at the Bureau. "The State Track and Field Championships have become a tradition in our community and we look forward to hosting the athletes and families again this year."

New sign installed at welcome center in Kingdom City
Welcome centers around the state offer information about many of the great destinations in Missouri. The Heart of Missouri Welcome Center in Kingdom City focuses on cities, attractions and lodging in the central Missouri area. The Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau has had a sign displayed in the center for the past several years. The sign was definitely in need of an update so that it showcased our new attraction, the Missouri State Penitentiary, and also matched our other marketing materials. The redesigned display is pictured to the right. If you are in Kingdom City, stop by the welcome center and see our sign, pick up some information and plan to spend some time in Jefferson City! The Hears of Missouri Welcome Center is on the northwest corner of the intersection of Highway 54 and Highway 70. |
Spend a Saturday in Jefferson City this summer!
Jefferson City has several attractions and events waiting for you to experience this summer. Here's a great way to spend a Saturday:
10 a.m. Missouri State Penitentiary
Most would think you were in some hot and heavy trouble if you went to the Missouri State Penitentiary, but that's not the case at all when you visit Jefferson City's newest attraction. Decommissioned in 2004, the historic Missouri State Penitentiary now offers public tours for $12 per person. See the cells which housed infamous inmates including Sonny Liston, who learned to box at MSP and went on to become heavyweight champion in 1961, James Earl Ray, who escaped from the penitentiary before he assassinated Martin Luther King Jr., and Pretty Boy Floyd. Visit the gas chamber where 40 executions took place and enjoy the intricate and fascinating history that lies behind the walls of MSP. www.MissouriPenTours.com

2 p.m. Missouri State Capitol
The city's most notable attraction, the Missouri State Capitol, covers an entire city block and can be seen as you enter Jefferson City from every direction. Jefferson City's capitol building was recently ranked as the "most beautiful capitol on the inside" on Sue Parks' 10 cool capitols list published in the April 28 issue of USA Today. There is some amazing artwork within the walls of this monument and a grand staircase that is breathtaking. The north side of the Capitol overlooks the Missouri River and is a great place to sit, relax and enjoy the view. The newest addition to the Capitol grounds is the Lewis and Clark Trailhead Plaza, which commemorates the Corps of Discovery passing through Jefferson City.
3 p.m. Central Dairy
If you're looking for a place to get out of the heat, you've got to go to Central Dairy. This old-fashioned ice cream parlor serves a wide variety of flavors in heaping portions, and it's very inexpensive!
After that, you can attend one of the many events going on in Jefferson City this summer including music in the streets, movies at the Capitol and more! Go to www.VisitJeffersonCity.com for all of the details. |
Announcements- Missouri River Pedestrian Bridge Groundbreaking
On Wednesday, May 12, area officials will gather on the north side of the Missouri River to celebrate the beginning of a project to construct a pedestrian/bicycle attachment on the U.S. 54 eastbound/U.S. 63 northbound Missouri River Bridge.
The groundbreaking event begins at 9:30 a.m. on the north side of the river at the Missouri Department of Conservation's Carl R. Noren Public Fishing Access located at Fourth Street and Cottonwood Drive. The ceremony will be held near the boat ramp. The public is invited to attend the groundbreaking, which will be held rain or shine.
The new $6.7 million bridge attachment will be eight feet wide and include two look out points with a view of the Missouri State Capitol. A ramp structure will be constructed on the north side of the river to allow access to the Katy Trail via the Missouri Department of Conservation public fishing area. The work will require closing the Main Street ramp during construction. While some lane closures may be necessary at times, MoDOT hopes to maintain three narrowed lanes of traffic across the bridge during much of the project.

Did you know?
The second level of the library of the Missouri Supreme Court Building has floors made of all glass. When the building was built, it did not have lights; the glass floors allowed light from the windows to filter down to the floor.
