Missouri State Penitentiary featured on 48 Hours and History Channel The Missouri State Penitentiary has recently received some well-deserved publicity on a national television show and national publication. On Saturday, March 13, 48 Hours did an episode about Joshua Kezer, a Missouri man who was convicted of a crime and later exonerated by Judge Richard Callahan. Kezer spent several years in the Missouri State Penitentiary, so the 48 Hours film crew and Kezer came to the MSP and taped an interview as well as quite a bit of other MSP footage. If you didn't see the program, it's available online. There is some amazing footage of the site. See it here.
The Missouri State Penitentiary was featured in the History Channel's e-newsletter on March 22, 2010. After working with representatives from the History Channel for several months, the Bureau was thrilled to see the e-newsletter dedicated to the MSP. This e-newsletter is sent out to about 44,000 people nationwide. You can read the e-newsletter by clicking here. |
Convention and Visitors Bureau resumes Saturday hours
Starting March 20, the Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau will resume its Saturday hours. The Bureau will be open every Saturday until October, excluding Easter Saturday (April 3). Over the past two years, the Bureau has offered extended business hours every Saturday from April through October. The Bureau found that the staff was able to help a large number of visitors who were downtown for different events or visiting Jefferson City during the weekend. As the weather gets warmer, many events will take place in Jefferson City on the weekends and the Convention and Visitors Bureau strives to be accessible to those who may need information about the city.
"These extra hours are designed to cater specifically to our visitors who will be in Jefferson City for events going on throughout the city," said Steve Picker, Convention and Visitors Bureau executive director."By opening for a few hours on Saturdays, we extend our outreach to those visiting our community."
The office will typically be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., but hours may be adjusted to coincide with other scheduled events in the downtown area. For more information, contact the Bureau at (573) 632-2820. |
Bluegrass and Barbecue
Come join barbecue specialists from across the country as they compete in Jefferson City's largest barbecue competition, the Capital City Cook Off. On April 16 and 17 at the Jefferson City Jaycee's Cole County Fairgrounds, approximately 70 teams will participate in this Kansas City Barbeque Society Sanctioned contest.
The two day event kicks off on Friday evening with a Buck-A-Bone event from 5-9 p.m. Buck-A-Bone is a competition among local, amateur barbecue fans during which the general public is invited to taste test dozens of different types of ribs. The beer garden opens at 5 p.m. and live music by Jason Luebbering and Turnstyle will be playing from 6-9 p.m. Tickets for the event are available at Scruggs Lumber and Zesto South and must be purchased in advance. Did you know?
The Jefferson City National Cemetery is comprised of both federal and confederate soldiers, a distinction not common to many cemeteries. Federal gravestones have the familiar arched top on the marker while confederate gravestones have a gabled angle top on the marker. | |
