Missouri State Penitentiary tours resume in March

The Missouri State Penitentiary opens its doors to the public the first weekend in March; for tours, of course.  In 2004, the Missouri State Penitentiary (MSP) was decommissioned; in May of 2009, the Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau began offering tours of the historic site to the public.  In its first year, over 3,000 people caught a glimpse of "life inside the walls."

TOM Capitol"The inaugural year of Missouri State Penitentiary tours far exceeded our expectations," said Steve Picker, executive director of the Bureau.  "People traveled from across the country to see this piece of history.  We have heard nothing but positive comments about the Missouri State Penitentiary tours."

This year the Bureau is offering an extended line-up of tours in addition to the basic two hour tour that was offered last year.  Now, visitors have the opportunity to take a one hour or two hour tour.

The one hour tour is more talking and less walking; it includes a couple of housing units, the dungeon cells and information about some of the MSP's most notable events and inmates.  The one hour tour does not include the gas chamber.  The two hour tour includes a couple of housing units in addition to those on the one hour tour, the gas chamber and a more extensive view of the MSP grounds.  Read more...

Bureau Athletic Events Committee to host annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser

The Athletic Events Committee, a sub-committee of the Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau, will host its annual spaghetti dinner at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 12 at the Eagles Club, 1411 Missouri Boulevard.

Tickets are $30 per couple and include meat and meatless spaghetti, beer and soda.  Cash prizes ranging from $100 to $1,000 are awarded to several ticket owners; a variety of door prizes are given away during the event as well.  A silent auction and a 50/50 raffle will also take place throughout the evening.

This fundraiser allows the Athletic Events Committee to continue its support of the attraction of new sporting events and retention of already existing sporting events in the Jefferson City area.  These events, such as state cross country and state track and field, have an enormous economic impact on our community and are a huge benefit to the tourism efforts of the Bureau.

For more information about this fundraiser or to purchase a ticket, contact the Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau at (573) 632-2820 or Daniel@VisitJeffersonCity.com.

Tourism professionals from across state host Capitol Days for Tourism in Jefferson City

On March 3-4, 2010, many of Missouri's tourism professionals will travel to Jefferson City to interact with the state legislature.  Capitol Days for Tourism, sponsored by the Missouri Travel Council, is an annual event that offers the tourism industry a chance to emphasize the importance of tourism to Missouri's economy.

Wednesday, March 3, hospitality partners will have the opportunity to learn about what's happening in the Capitol, specifically in regard to issues of importance to the tourism industry.  Attendees will then visit their respective legislators' offices to discuss the invaluable economic benefit tourism provides to the state.

On Thursday morning, legislators are invited to attend a pancake breakfast on the Capitol's 3rd floor rotunda. Several senators and representatives take their turns cooking up flapjacks and serving those going through the line.  The pancake flipping starts at 7:30 a.m.  For more information about Capitol Days for Tourism, contact Pat Amick, Missouri Travel Council, at (573) 636-2814 or pat_amick@socket.net.
