Jefferson City named Missouri State Track and Field host city for upcoming years
Jefferson City will continue to serve as the host city for the Missouri State Track and Field Championships, according to an announcement made by the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Board last week. MSHSAA considered proposals from several Missouri cities, including Springfield and Kansas City, for the 2010-2013 championships. The Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau and Lincoln University submitted a joint proposal which was reviewed by the MSHSAA board. The board said that the event will remain in Jefferson City at Lincoln University for 2010 and 2011, with an option of extending the venue through the 2013 championships. Read more... |
Travel book author legend, Arthur Frommer, visits Jefferson City
The Convention and Visitors Bureau hosted an open house on July 16 in honor of Arthur Frommer. During this open house Mayor Landwehr presented Frommer with a key to city and a framed $5 bill to "pay for his trip to Jefferson City;" Frommer wrote the book "Europe on $5 a Day." Frommer's roots are in Jefferson City; he lived here until he was 14. At that time, he had never been outside of the state of Missouri. Frommer said he regarded Jefferson City as the "Athens of America." During his time in Jefferson City, Frommer made a radio talk show appearance on KWOS, his former employer, toured the News Tribune printing press and visited other attractions and sites of interest in the city. For more photos from the Frommer's visit, click here.
After Frommer left Jefferson City, he shared his thoughts about the town on his radio show on July 19, and on his blog. Make sure you listen to or read this; he had some incredibly positive things to say about the capital city. |
Missouri State Penitentiary web site now available
The Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau recently unveiled a web site dedicated solely to the Missouri State Penitentiary (MSP). The site, www.MissouriPenTours.com, highlights not only the current hard hat tours that are being offered but also the immense history of MSP. Stories of escape attempts, infamous inmates and riots line the pages of the web site and allow visitors a glimpse into the prison without leaving their home or office. One of the sections includes photos of the buildings, video inside the walls and audio that was recorded in various housing units and locations on the grounds. While the web site pales in comparison to the actual experience of visiting and touring the prison, it allows users to learn about much of the history that took place within the walls. The web site was designed and created by a group of offenders at the Jefferson City Correctional Center who are employed by the Center for Braille and Narration Production, a program administered by Rehabilitation Services for the Blind. For more information about the Missouri State Penitentiary hard hat tours, contact the Bureau at (866) 998-6998. |
Convention and Visitors Bureau works with Missouri Film Commission The Convention and Visitors Bureau has been working closely with the Missouri Film Commission to encourage film production and shooting in Jefferson City. Bringing a film to Jefferson City would be a great economic boon to the community.
Daniel Helton, sales manager at the Bureau, has taken the lead on this project. He has worked with the Film Commission to showcase several sites in Jefferson City including downtown (as shown in the photos), the Missouri State Penitentiary and Lincoln University.
Last weekend, the Bureau organized a photo shoot of downtown set in the 1950s, complete with period cars and attire. The idea behind this shoot was to show that Jefferson City's downtown strongly resembles a downtown in the 50s and could be used as the location for such a setting. See more photos from the shoot here. |
