Summer Fire School will be back in Jefferson City
Jefferson City was, once again, chosen as the host city for the University of Missouri ExtensionFire and Rescue Training Institute (MU FRTI) Summer Fire School and Midwest Wildfire Training Academy. The Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau was recently notified that the Capitol Plaza will serve as the host hotel for the event through 2013, with a commitment to extend after that.  Summer Fire School, which has become one of the city's staple events, is one of the largest events in the city.  Jefferson City realized an estimated economic impact of $289,000 in 2009.
Kevin Zumwalt, Fire and Rescue Training Institute assistant director, said that Jefferson City was chosen for several reasons: central location, price and community support.
"Community support is the primary reason we chose to continue the event in Jefferson City," Zumwalt said. "The city and local fire departments provide equipment and other logistical support unmatched by any other central location."

Hotel News: Candlewood Suites has gone green
The Missouri Hotel and Lodging Association (MH&LA) recently announced that the Candlewood Suites Hotel of Jefferson City has earned the designation as a Certified Green Hotel by the MH&LA.  Candlewood Suites earned this designation for their efforts in multiple areas of corporate responsibility; both through reducing their footprint on the environment and conserving natural resources. 2009 Calendar Cover
The program focuses on Candlewood reducing their footprint on the environment by using environmentally green cleaning chemicals approved by either the EPA or Greenseal, as well as using at least 30% recycled paper in its office functions.  The hotel must also reduce the amount of waste generated through recycling efforts which minimize the actual amount of non-recyclable waste that ends up in our landfills each and every year.  The other focus of the program is Candlewood's conservation of our natural resources.  Water conservation is practiced by using water conserving fixtures in all guest area showers, toilets, and faucets.  Energy conservation efforts include installation of an energy efficiency management system on air conditioners, low wattage light fixtures and bulbs, as well as the purchase of clean or renewable electricity from their electric provider.
MH&LA's Certified Green program criteria was created by the MH&LA with invaluable input from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.  The program consists of a Self-Certification Workbook with conditions of the program agreed to by the hotel's management as well as random independent inspections by a LEED certified inspector of at least 10 percent of all hotels involved.
Missouri State Museum needs YOUR input!MO State Museum
Come to the Missouri State Museum for a special "after hours" event on July 21, 2009 from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m.  Free food will be served!  The museum will host a community dialogue and wants to hear from you, whether you love the museum or have no idea where it is. This dialogue will be guided by a facilitator and the information gathered will be used to figure out the strengths and weaknesses of the museum.  The Missouri State Museum is located on the first floor of the Capitol building at 201 West Capitol Ave.  Visitors can enter the museum though the carriage entrance underneath the grand staircase on the south side of the Capitol building.
