Rev. John W. Swope, SJDear friends,

Although our students are only freshmen and sophomores, we are already helping them to prepare for the college admissions process. Earlier this month, every Cristo Rey Jesuit student visited a college or university. These visits help our young men and women to visualize themselves as college students and get excited about their futures. I am grateful for the incredible professional expertise and committment that Lucy Neale Duke, our director of college counseling, brings to CRJ.

Cristo Rey Jesuit's students are now even more motivated to try their hardest in the classroom. They know that if they want to make it to the college of their choice after their four years at Cristo Rey Jesuit, they will have to stay focused and put forth their best effort.

We are grateful to all of the admissions officers, student tour guides, and other college representatives who made our second annual college visits such an inspirational experience for our young people!

Sincerely yours,

Volunteers, donors and teachers recognized at April events
 Commonweal students and foundation representatives
This month, Cristo Rey Jesuit held three events to recognize individuals who have made a difference in the lives of our students. On April 23, CRJ's volunteers were honored at the Volunteer Appreciation Reception at the Loyola/Notre Dame Library. Volunteers Dee Harris, Justin White, and Sissy Pedra Nobre spoke about their wonderful experiences working with and on behalf of CRJ's students.

On April 24, our students welcomed the middle and elementary school teachers who had the greatest positive impact on them to Cristo Rey Jesuit. The teachers were treated to tours of the school, dinner, and an awards ceremony honoring their service to our students.

On April 25, benefactors who give at least $1,000 to the school annually were welcomed to the second annual President's Brunch at Cristo Rey Jesuit. Guests were treated to a piano performance by Craig Williams, class of 2011, and enjoyed student-led tours of the school. Above, student ambassadors welcome our guests to the school. Please click here to view more photos from the brunch. Photos from Stand Up for Students are also available now.

We are pleased to be establishing these traditions in the early years of the school. Many thanks once again to all of our supporters!

CRJ students pay colleges a visit
Students at Gettysburg
What's college really like?

Inquiring Cristo Rey Jesuit freshmen and sophomores want to know! And it is Lucy Neale Duke's personal mission to let them know.

CRJ's director of college counseling is helping our students unravel the mysteries of college by sending the entire student body to colleges throughout the area for campus visits. On Tuesday, April 7, sophomores traveled to Georgetown University and McDaniel, Hood and Gettysburg colleges. On Wednesday, April 8, freshmen visited Stevenson, Johns Hopkins and Morgan State universities, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and Loyola College in Maryland. Before heading off in vans and buses for their visits, CRJ students participated a presentation and real-life reflections on college life by Loyola College students, organized by Loyola senior Justin White.

The UMBC visit had a special twist. Education students in Professor Sandy Danna's course who volunteer at CRJ mounted a fundraising effort to cover the cost of transportation and lunch for the visitors from Cristo Rey Jesuit. Led by UMBC student Willie Archer, the class "just wanted to make the students' visit to UMBC special." Read more about their generosity in UMBC's internal newsletter.

Says sophomore Allan Johnson, Jr. about his day at Gettysburg, "Our visit was exciting! I got to see the campus and the athletics department. A junior led us on a tour and told us EVERYTHING about college." Allan is pictured left with fellow sophomore Laura Harpool and Ms. Duke.

CIP client profile: Mercy Medical Center

Mercy Medical Center's commitment to the Corporate Internship Program continues to grow! Mercy now employs two teams with plans to hire a total of four student teams in 2009-2010! Tom Mullan, CEO and president, and Sister Helen Amos, RSM, executive chair of the Mercy Health Services Board of Trustees, lead the hospital's commitment. Sister Helen also serves as a trustee on Cristo Rey Jesuit's board.

Managing the CRJ student teams at Mercy is the responsibility of human resources, led by Jessie Reed, senior vice president. Over the past two years, Esty Daly, senior employment specialist, has overseen the logistics, bringing a special care and concern for each student worker. She has assigned students to departments throughout the hospital, including human resources, information technology, restorative therapy, the library, the foundation, patient care services, and the pharmacy.

Student workers at Mercy become real members of the departments where they are placed, dping meaningful work, attending staff meetings, and eating lunch with colleagues, a special perk each student worker enjoys every day! Esty notes that students benefit from mentoring by supervisors and co-workers. She believes that the students' work at Mercy will open up career possibilities, "We hope that some of the students really like healthcare and even come back to work with us one day." Indeed, Mercy's downtown location and long tradition of service to the community could be a perfect fit for Cristo Rey Jesuit graduates aspiring to make their city a happier, healthier place.
