September 2008
Dear friends,
Rev. John W. Swope, SJ

Dr. Benjamin S. Carson's inspiring words to Cristo Rey Jesuit on Monday, September 29 were "awesome," according to one Cristo Rey Jesuit sophomore. Dr. Carson's remarks emphasized hard work, perseverance and character, reinforcing the principles we teach--and live--every day at Cristo Rey Jesuit. I am deeply grateful to Peggy Otenasek and Harriet Long for arranging to bring this world-famous physician and philanthropist to our school.

Awesome also describes the first full month of classes. Students, sharp in their new uniforms and sporting messenger bags donated by parishioners of the Catholic Community of St. Francis Xavier in Hunt Valley, have come to school ready to learn every day. Lucy Neale Duke, director of college counseling, welcomed admissions representatives from Fordham, Villanova and Widener universities, with many more visits scheduled for the rest of the fall. Lucy is also offering special PSAT prep sessions for students.

With 22 new Corporate Internship Program clients signed on this year, we have added additional shuttle bus routes to transport student workers. We are proud to count businesses in Baltimore City, Linthicum, Towson, Rosedale and Hunt Valley as important partners in our program.

This awesome month, and indeed this awesome school, would not be possible without the tremendous support of so many friends. Thank you again for all you do to make Cristo Rey Jesuit possible for our students!

Sincerely,

Rev. John W. Swope, SJ signature

The evening's presentation including a moving poetry reading by James Townes, class of 2011. Other speakers included trustees Jack Luetkemeyer and Marjorie Rodgers Cheshire and school president Rev. Thank you also to all of our generous scholarship donors, who helped to make the first year of school such a success!

Dr. Ben Carson speaks as part of school's newly inaugurated "Think Big" Speaker Series

On Monday, September 29, Cristo Rey Jesuit welcomed Dr. Benjamin S. Carson, Johns Hopkins Hospital's world-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon, to the school community. A Presidential Medal of Freedom honoree, Dr. Carson shared with Cristo Rey Jesuit's students the story of his journey from poverty in Detroit's inner city to academic accomplishment at Yale and a successful medical career. His presentation is part of our new "Think Big" speaker series, which brings community and business leaders to speak--and to inspire--our students.

Dr. Ben Carson speaks to Cristo Rey Jesuit studentsDr. Carson encouraged the students to "think big," and never believe that something is impossible just because it hasn't been done before. Dr. Carson then took questions on his life and career from Cristo Rey Jesuit students, all of whom had read one of his books. The Baltimore Examiner covered this event in a September 30 article.

Many thanks to Peggy Otenasek and Harriet Long for making this event possible!
