Arc Notes
November 2010

Arc US 60 years logo The Arc is one of the nation's largest charities!
You might be surprised to learn that The Arc has the 9th largest total income among charities in the United States. The Chronicle of Philanthropy recently released its study on the nation's largest charities and found that while there was an 11% drop in giving to charities nationally, private support to The Arc increased by 35% over the previous year. Despite being one of the nation's largest non-profits, The Arc has relatively small name recognition.  In an effort to improve visibility and awareness of the organization, The Arc will be rolling out a new logo and branding program on March 1st! Stay tuned for more details!

Retired CEO of Melwood, Earl Copus Jr., was given The Arc's highest honor, The Lifetime Achievement Award. Copus became the CEO of Melwood in 1966 when the organization was small and struggling. Upon Copus' retirement, Melwood had become a $72 million internationally known leader and innovator in the field of disabilities. Under Copus' leadership, Melwood has become one of the nation's premier Ability One contractors with the Federal Government and has positively changed the lives of thousands of people with developmental disabilities. Congratualtions, Earl, on a job well done!

Paul MarchandCristy MarchandThe Arc says Goodbye to the Marchands.

Paul Marchand, Director of The Arc's Governmental Affairs Office, is retiring after a 38-year career with The Arc. Paul played key roles in most of our national disability policy, including the right to a free public education, supported employment, and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Cristy Marchand, the Executive Director of The Arc of Maryland for the past 20 years, and the wife of Paul, will also be leaving in January to accept a position as the Executive Director of the New Mexico Developmental Disabilities Planning Council in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  The Marchands have both been amazing advocates for people with developmental disabilities over the years and will be greatly missed.

The need for Low Intensity Support Services (LISS) has exceeded The Arc's allotted amount of funding for this fiscal year.  Families will not be able to access assistance until February 1, 2011. The Arc will be working closely with other advocacy organizations during the legislative session to seek additional resources from DDA to support the hundreds of families who will benefit from LISS.
