Personal Care Help is Available!
Personal Care is a Medicaid funded program for people who need direct assistance with tasks such as eating meals, bathing, grooming, using the toilette, and light housekeeping. Caregivers typically come to the home once each day, and help with assigned personal care tasks. The caregiver leaves once the tasks are completed, and thus cannot be used for extended supervision purposes. Personal Care services are unavailable to individuals living in group homes or those receiving DDA funded staff supports in their family home. Interested families should call Rita Eze, RN at 301-925-7050 ext. 310. |

 Spotlight a House of Worship:
Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchellville is working diligently to include children with disabilities in their worship services. The church works directly with families to create an individual religious education plan for each child with a disability. The focus for most families is to help their child fully participate in worship and receive the sacraments.
Holy Family's program currently works with children ages 3-18. The program meets weekly, and children are included in classes with their non-disabled peers whenever possible. Most of their Sunday school teachers work as special educators within the Prince George's County Public School System.
Last year the church explored new ways to prepare children with disabilities for Mass. They held a weeknight mass that was more low-key and shorter than the typical Sunday celebration. The church hopes to make this a regular part of their weekly schedule this year.
For more information about how Holy Family is including people with disabilities, visit their website at www.holyfamilywoodmore.com. |

Preparing for Transition: Ready at 21
Fifteen families met at The Arc Building this month for the first of four parent/student orientations to the Ready at 21 Program. The program, which has been expanded through a grant from the Walmart Foundation and The Arc of the US, helps prepare students for life after high school. With the support of their families and eighteen Ready at 21 sessions, students will learn about community living, self determination, employability, and career awareness. Sessions will take place at Prince George's Community College, and students will attend field trips to explore these topics. |
