Join us for the Grand-Opening of our new garden!
Arc volunteers and staff worked hard last week to get The Arc's Community Garden ready for visitors! The Arc will celebrate with a grand-opening reception on June 11th between the hours of 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. Located at The Arc's Bridges program, the garden can be enjoyed by the entire neighborhood, thanks to the TKF Foundation. The TKF Foundation is a private grant-making foundation whose purpose is to inspire and create "Open Spaces, Sacred Places." It partners with organizations to create sacred places, which increase a sense of community and contribute to a deepening of human connections. |

Shall We Dance?
Stop by The Arc's Largo Center at 2 p.m. on a Friday, and find yourself in the middle of an all-out dance party. Rap music resonates throughout a room where staff and participants form a circle, each taking turns to perform in the middle while the rest cheer, clap, swing and sway.
Some of The Arc's most advanced dancers use this time to practice for their dance recital with the Louise Pyles Dance Academy. Pyles teaches people of all abilities, but she specializes at teaching classes for individuals with developmental disabilities.
Day program participants from both Largo and Temple Hills have been attending dance lessons with Louise Pyles for nearly two years. Pyles teaches the groups a variety of social dances, which include line dances like the electric slide as well as hand dancing.

Hot off the press: Transforming the Lives of Special Needs Children
A few years ago The Arc created the Spiritual Community Collaboration, which unites churches throughout the metro DC area and explores programs and possibilies for people with disabilities in their faith communities. This topic is one of great importance to Arc parent and board member, Rev. Dr. Juanita Pughsley, who recently published a book about the church's treatment of children with disabilities. The book is written for church members as well as parents of children with disabilities, and containes personal stories and experiences from parents and ministers. The book is available at amazon.com and xulonpress.com. |

UMD Students and Staff Give a Day of Service. The garden at The Arc's Laurel Center is tilled and growing thanks to volunteers from the University of Maryland. Volunteers worked alongside Arc staff members and program participants to prepare the garden for the summer growing season. Corn, greens, peppers, and many other wonderful vegetables should be popping up soon!
