sister & brother playingImportant Update on LISS: Families of individals with developmental disabilities will be pleased to learn that the Low Intensity Support Services (LISS) program has undergone changes that make it more accessible and beneficial to children and adults. LISS may be accessed multiple times throughout a year and across multiple years. In other words, it is NOT a once in a lifetime service. While LISS still cannot exceed $3,000 in one year, families may apply with a specific request more than once a year as well as annually. Click here for additional information on LISS and an application.

Happily Employed at Happy Day Care!

"
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall. Humpty Dumpty had a great fall..."
The children at Happy Day Care in Clinton enthusiastically clap and sing as Ashlei Rodriguez leads them in one of their favorite nursery rhymes.

Ashlei has always loved children and dreamed of one day working with them. The Arc's Employment Services Division has worked alongside Ashlei to help her realize her dreams. After completing a teaching internship at Hopewell Academy over a year ago, Ashlei began working at Happy Day Care as a Teacher's Assistant.

This year's Bash, sponsored by The Columbia Bank, was attended by over 400 people and raised over $27,000! Proceeds from the Bowling Bash go to the Sarah Petit Fund, which provides recreation and vacation grants to people with developmental disabilities.

Think of all the people who will be able to go places, make friends, and have fun this year as a result of your generosity! Thank you to everyone who helped make the Bash such a success!

New Wheels at The Arc! new van

The Arc received funding from the Maryland Transit Authority's (MTA) Capital Grant Program to purchase this all accessible van. The brand new van will be used to transport people to and from day programs and will enable more people to go out to activities in the community on a daily basis.

Funding for Transitioning Youth!

The HSC Foundation is again partnering with The Arc through the Life Enrichment Awards Program (LEAP) grant.  The grant allows The Arc to assist youth between the ages of 14 and 25 with goods and services that help with transition planning and implementation. Last year 11 students received grants for things such as tuition for career related courses, communication devices, and entrepreneurial start-up costs. Click here to download an application for the grant. For more information, contact Karen Oliver at 301-925-7050, ext. 245.

A new study may help detect autism in infants.
National Public Radio (NPR) reported last week on a study of infants and their ability to differentiate between human and non-human sounds and emotions relayed in human voices. The study suggests that early warning signs for autism and other developmental disorders related to language acquisition may be spotted as early as 7 months.
