r word
Banning the R-word
The R-word has been getting lots of attention lately as conversations have developed around the comments made by Rahm Emanuel and Rush Limbaugh in February.

Peter Berns, CEO of The Arc of the United States describes the use of the R-word as "the moral equivalent of hate speech."  He told Emanuel, "Every time they (people with disabilities) hear the word all these images flood back to them about how they've been laughed at, pointed at, made fun of, sterilized ..."

Thirty-five states have voted to remove the word from health and education codes. Rosa's Law, which in the state of Maryland has changed the term "mental retardation" to "intellectual and developmental disabilities" is now being voted on at the national level.

A self-advocacy group in Minnesota addresses the R-word issue in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YONvS7Qm-gc.

Prince George's County Advocates
Advocates tell their stories in Annapolis!
Prince Georgians joined other advocates from around the state and met with legislators in Annapolis last week to discuss critical disability issues. Delegates and senators were asked to support the Governor's budget without making any new cuts to disability funding and were given information about important disability bills that are currently on the table.
