MD Board of Public Works Cuts Developmental Disabilities Services Again.

rally in AnnapolisFacing a state budget with a massive deficit, the Maryland Board of Public Works cut an additional $470 million from the FY 2010 budget, effective October 1, 2009. Of this total, the Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) was the recipient of $21.7 million in cuts. Key elements of cuts in developmental disabilities services include:
  • A 10% or $1 million cut to Rolling Access Funds. These funds provide small grants to families to assist in caring for their children within their own home.
  • A 2% or $15 million cut to residential, supported employment, day and community support programs provided by nonprofit agencies like The Arc of Prince George's County. This comes on top of a nearly 1% cut earlier this summer.
  • A 15% or $5 million cut to Service Coordination. These are casemanagement services that facilitate access to DDA services and coordinate service provision for people already in services.
  • A 50% or $1 million cut to Adult Respite Care through the Department of Human Resources.
Provider agencies are scrambling to accommodate these cuts in budgets that already were severely  inadequate. One third of these agencies ended fiscal year 2009 with a deficit. With these cuts, the situation will only get worse.
The Governor has created a page for citizens' feedback on the budget cuts. Click here: http://www.martinomalley.com/CutsFeedback and let him know your thoughts on these cuts.

This grant will allow The Arc to expand its Future Planning Program, a program that assists Arc families with long-term financial and estate planning. Equally exciting is the news that The World Bank Community Connections Fund will be providing a grant to help place graduates of The Arc's Office Skill Training Center in various office jobs throughout the metropolitan area.
Making music as Bridges

Harpist & Bridges participantKelly Shumann, 17 yr old harpist from Oakton, Va, entertained the paraticipants at Bridges this past August. Kelly encouraged participants to strum the harp or feel the vibration emitted from the harp's frame. Both participants and staff were introduced to the typical music played on a harp. Kelly is pictured with Phillip Frierson and program specialist, Keishia Walker-Fells.
