5210-- LIVE HEALTHY EVERY DAY
5210At the Y, we're committed to children's healthy development and well-being. We want to make it easier for busy families to eat well and get plenty of physical activity, so it is with great excitement that we introduce our 5210 program.

5210 is a new program the Y is implementing this fall in all of our School-Age Child Care and Preschool Child Development programs. It is a program that helps children to: learn about healthy eating and exercise, redirect excessive "screen time" (TV, computer use, video games, etc.) and select healthier drinks.

5210 will educate children already participating in our programs about making healthy choices, and it will provide take-home educational materials so families can support healthy choices as well. The 5210 program is based on the most recent science and research available; we've added "the Y way" to make it fun and interactive for children.

5210 is built on four main pillars that help children live healthy everyday:

- 5      Five servings of fruits and vegetables each day

- 2      Two hours or less of screen time daily

- 1      One hour or more of physical activity each day

- 0      Zero sugary drinks

The 5210 program incorporates lessons and activities about healthy eating with physical activity. Together, they encourage healthy behaviors through active play, literacy and math-skill development, creative learning, and hands-on snack time activities. The program will be implemented in many other Y programs in 2013, such as: swim lessons, youth super sports, child watch, first tee, summer camp and others.

GETTING INVOLVED IN OUR COMMUNITY
Thanks to our Day of Caring Volunteers!

We would like to thank all those individuals who attended the United Way Day of Caring for their time and hard work. We had groups from Mary Immaculate Hospital, Ferguson Enterprise, NASA and several other individuals that picked The Victory YMCA as their Charity of Choice to help this year.

Your hard work enabled us to mulch and clear the outskirts of our property line, paint our office space and help organize our Kids Consignment sale that was held the following day.  Your help was truly appreciated and welcome. Thanks again to all who volunteer at the YMCA and throughout our community!

Welcome Center Volunteer Needed
If you are looking for a fun way to get involved with our YMCA and make new friends, then we need your help at the Welcome Center!  Membership card scanners are needed Monday through Friday from 12:30-3:30, and we need someone to make coffee in the mornings until noon from Monday through Friday.  Any time that you can donate will be more than appreciated! Please contact Dana King at dana.king@peninsulaymca.org if you can help.

Chamber of Commerce Before-Hours Networking
Want to increase your business and meet others who can help one another?  YMCA members are invited to attend the monthly "York County Business Before-Hours" coffee meet and greet held at 7:30 a.m. every fourth Monday morning in the Victory Mulitpurpose room. You may attend two meetings before you will be asked to join the group as a member.  This is a great way to meet new people, make important community contacts and increase your exposure while helping others to do the same.  Contact Michael Bennett if you have any questions at (757) 867-3300 x 214.
 OCTOBER IS....

Cause Awareness Month

We want to give our members a chance to express the cause that is close to their heart!

Next time you are at the Y, select the color ribbon that represents the cause(s) you support, write a message, the first name of the person affected (or just initials) on the ribbons. Give the ribbon to the Welcome Center and we will display the ribbons throughout the month of October.
