| MARCH IS... | | |
Women's History Month
The role of women in the early years of the YMCA was limited due to the fact that leaders focused on programs for young men. The first steps to include women were in the 1930's, when swimming and lifesaving classes were offered. Soon the Y began sponsoring campfires, picnics and other outings for families. Women were given opportunity to supervise playground activities and conduct parenting classes, as well as being admitted to the YMCA vocational and secondary school programs.
The advent of WWII accelerated opportunities for women to become more involved through childcare programs, day camps and other activities.
The role of women in the YMCA steadily evolved over the decades from enrolling in homemaking and crafts classes, to playing badminton and softball, to working as paid employees and obtaining positions of leadership. By the early 1970's, girls and women had equal access to all Y programs.
National Nutrition Month
Healthy eating on a budget can be challenging, so we have some hints that will help!
Plan:
- Plan weekly meals and snacks according to budget
- Find recipes online
- Stretch expensive food items into more than one meal (ie, stew, stir fry, soups)
- Make a list and stick to it
- Check for sales and coupons
- Ask about store loyalty card
Purchase
- Don't shop when you are hungry or rushed
- Store brands are often cheaper
- Compare unit prices
- Bulk shopping may be cheaper
- Buy in-season fruit and vegetables
- Pre-cut fruits and vegetables are often more expensive
Prepare
- Prepare meals in advance
- Double recipes and freeze portions
- Substitute beans and peas for meat
