VOLUNTEER WITH YOUR FAMILY

Family Volunteer Day is Saturday, November 19 from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the Victory Family YMCA.

One great way to serve your community while teaching your children about helping others is to volunteer at our Family Volunteer Day.  You can help by decorating boxes and then filling them with food items that we have collected throughout October.  The boxes will be delivered to local families who will appreciate a healthy dinner to celebrate Thanksgiving.

We are currently accepting canned goods and non-perishable items that are needed to fill the boxes including canned vegetables, fruit, beans, cranberry sauce, gravy mix, boxed stuffing, rice or mashed potatoes. Food gift certificates are also a welcomed item!

For more information contact Donna Blake, Community Development Director, at (757) 867-3300 x 212 or at Donna.Blake@peninsulaymca.org

STOPPING DIABETES

Diabetes is a chronic disease where the body can no longer control its blood sugar levels properly. Complications may include high blood pressure and permanent damage to the kidneys, eyes, feet and nerves.

This disease currently affects nearly 26 million Americans adult and children and the numbers continue to skyrocket. It is projected that one in three American adults will have diabetes by the year 2050 (ADA Fact Sheet 2011).

The more we learn and know about diabetes the more we can support our loved ones who have diabetes and also help prevent it. This year's theme is "I raise my hand to stop diabetes." Use this opportunity to learn more about this disease in your community and how you can help stop it.

The Victory Family YMCA is holding a diabetes day on Saturday, November 12 (see article below.) Also check out the American Diabetes Association website and Facebook group to learn about other events happening in your area.

What action will you take to help stop diabetes?

Gabrielle Willis, RD

NATIONAL DIABETES AWARENESS DAY
November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, a time for communities to rally together and talk about the seriousness of the disease and how to best manage it.

On Saturday, November 12th, from 9:00 a.m.- 12:30 p.m., the Victory YMCA partners with the Chesapeake chapter of the American Diabetes Association for a diabetes awareness event.  This event will include glucose screenings, exercise and nutrition lectures as well as a cooking demonstration.  PDF

There is no cost, and you are asked to register at the Welcome Center by November 9th. For more information contact Franki Pivarnik, Community Wellness Director, at (757) 867-3300 x 225 or franki.pivarnik@peninsulaymca.org
APPRECIATING OUR MILITARY FAMILIES
The Victory Family YMCA would like to express appreciation for the sacrifices and dedication of our military families by posting their pictures on the lobby bulletin board.  Please submit your family's picture to the Welcome Center between November 1 through the 15th and you will be entered in a drawing for free 3-month membership!
