MY PLATE NUTRITION

Have you heard that the USDA recently announced the retirement of the MyPyramid for the new simplified MyPlate? Here are some easy tips for using the new nutrition icon.

  • Start with a 9 in plate.
  • Half of your plate should be fruits and vegetables:
    • Fresh and frozen vegetables with little salt and butter are most advantageous.
    • Aim to eat fresh and frozen fruits with little to no added sugar.
  • Make the other half of your plate grains and protein:
    • A little over ½ of your plate should be whole grains
      • Try grain sources like whole wheat bread, brown rice, whole grain pasta, quinoa, cous cous, and whole grain crackers.
      • Eat less refined grain products like white bread, sugary cereals, and desserts.
    • Aim to eat lean meat and plant sources of protein
      • Poultry without the skin, fish such as salmon and tuna, and lean beef are a few examples of lean meats.
      • Plant sources of protein such as beans, soy, and nuts are filling and have little to no saturated fat.
  • Add dairy as a side:
    • Low fat sources of dairy such as skim milk, low fat yogurt, and low fat cheese are best.

Also, check out the new MyPlate resources at ChooseMyPlate.gov which features photograph examples of portion sizes, nutrition tips, and meal planning assistance.

Happy Eating!
