VICTORY Y STRIVES TO SERVE YOU BETTER!

Annual Refurbishing

September traditionally brings many changes--the beginning of school, a less crowded I-64, (hopefully) cooler temperatures, and a newly refurbished Victory Family YMCA!

On September 6, enjoy a sparkling clean pool, shiny wood floors and a gleaming facility!

Our facility will be closed on September 1 and 2 to accomplish this feat, but we guarantee the wait will be well worth it.  From August 30- September 5 the gym, group exercise A and both racquetball courts will be closed for refinshing.  And, remember, we are traditionally closed for Labor Day, which is September 5. We will fully re-open on the 6th.

As always, your patience during this process is appreciated.

If you have any questions, please contact the Welcome Center at (757) 867-3300.

WHAT'S  NEW WITH WELLNESS

America on the Move
YMCA Activate America is a public health initiative that is making healthy living a reality for millions of Americans.  This initiative is the YMCA's response to America's growing obesity and health problems.

From Saturday, September 17, through Friday, September 23, the Victory YMCA will offer many events such as a "Fit to Worship 5K", an "Ask Your Trainer" program, nutrition lectures, health screenings, family water games, and many other fun and informative programs.

See the Victory YMCA website for more information or contact Franki Pivarnik, Community Wellness Director, at (757) 867-3300 x 225 or at franki.pivarnik@peninsulaymca.org

Walking, Talking and Making Friends
There's a fun new club here at our Y where you can not only get in shape, but make new aquaintances in the process!  The "Walkie-Talkie" Walking Club meets on Monday and Wednesday mornings to walk the area. Strollers are welcome. Best of all, it is free!  PDF

Women on Weights
Here's a good, safe way to learn the basics of strength training in an entry-level personal training format.  Join other women to learn the correct use of equipment and free weights.  This course runs from September 18-28 and costs $65 for members and $85 for non-members.  Sign up at the Welcome Center.

A Wellness Success Story

Meet Rachel Kirkland, a Victory Family YMCA success story! Rachel has been a YMCA member for over a year and through hard work and dedication has not only lost over 120 pounds, but has found that her YMCA membership has truly made a difference in her life and the life of her family.

Rachel's story begins with a devastating injury when she fell on stairs, injured both knees and found that she was too heavy to get up. It was a life-changing moment for her. Joining the Y gave her a place to do rehabilitation. As she built up her endurance and ability to exercise she found that her physical limitations decreased. Trainers Matt and Jackie guided her recovery and weight loss. Rachel says, "It was these relationships, which are still with me today, that helped me through my most difficult days."

Later she added water aerobics classes to her routine as well trying out different group exercise classes such as Pilates, Powercut and Spinning. She is also active in a weight loss support group.

Rachel found that other positive changes have happened besides getting in shape. Her five-year-old daughter loves to play in Child Watch and take gymnastics, soccer and swim lessons. Her husband also now works out in the Wellness Center. Rachel feels healthier than ever and has more energy. The friendships and connections she has made provide her with support and understanding, and she feels that she has a brighter future.

Rachel calls the Victory Y her "community of support." If you know someone who could benefit from such a community, bring them as a guest. As Rachel says, "You can work out anywhere, but the Victory YMCA takes you by the hand, looks you in the eye, and makes you believe that "you can do this!"

Way to go, Rachel! We are proud of you.

JOURNEY TO FREEDOM

Journey to Freedom is an 8-week Christ-centered small groupbutton study designed to help you make a change in your life. A failure to lay a proper foundation for change is the number one reason people don't succeed in transforming their life. Journey to Freedom will help you build this critical foundation by providing tools, support and motivation you need to achieve significant and lasting change.

Guided by Journey to Freedom's trained facilitators, you'll learn:
·         What is needed to make real change, and why your

          other attempts have failed.
·         How to lay the foundation to solve any problem and

          achieve any goal.
·         How to silence your inner critic and find your true

          purpose.
·         The difference between intrinsic and extrinsic

          motivation.

"I never realized how many people there were that shared the same issues. It's so freeing to be with others and share our experiences."

-Audrey

Classes begin the week of September 12, 2011. Please contact the Welcome Center desk or Lisa Weinreich at
Lisa.Weinreich@peninsulaymca.org  for more details.

PLAY HERE

At the Y, "play time" can de-stress, bring families closerPlay here together, or fulfill the need for challenge and camaraderie. The ability to "play" seems to get lost as we age and mature, but is vital to our health and well-being. Invite your friends to play at the Y. If they join September 6-27, we'll waive their joining fee; families save $100!

EASIER PROGRAM SEARCH COMING

In an effort to make it easier for our members to find and register for programs we are making some updates to our online program search.

Beginning September 7th, a new program search bar will replace the program list you may be familiar with. You'll simply type the name of the program or a program keyword and a list of options will appear. It's that easy! Nothing has changed in the actual program registration process, only the program search will be updated.

To view a short video click here.

We hope this makes it easier and faster to find the programs you are looking for.
